UGA lays egg against Auburn, loses 28-10
An offense that had set records for production suddenly lost a game due to complete and utter futility as Georgia managed just 223 yards of offense. The loss pretty much takes Georgia out of serious championship contention.
The combination of Kody Burns and Ben Tate has been effective all season. Tate is a serious Heisman contender. However, they had lost two of their last three games, including a 51-49 heartbreaker in five overtimes at the hands of LSU. Meanwhile, their defense had given up an average of just over 50 points per game in that three-game span.
So it makes complete sense that they would absolutely shut down Georgia, one of the most prolific offensive teams in the nation... right?
Regardless of what makes sense or doesn't, that's what happened yesterday. Georgia can kiss their national title hopes goodbye.
Burns got things rolling early in the second quarter when the Tigers got on the board thanks to a 44-yard touchdown pass to junior halfback Mario Fannin.
Auburn would stretch the lead to 21-0 on a two-yard run by tate and a second touchdown pass, this of 35 yards, from Burns to Montez Billings.'
Georgia looked a little better in the second half, but were a shadow of their former selves the entire contest.
"It wasn't pretty out there," said a curt Mark Richt after the game. "We are going back to the drawing board, obviously."
