Un-Bear-Able Loss
Nebraska State's promising season took another gut-shot Saturday as Baylor socked the Prairie Dogs 45-35 in front of a silenced Ab-Linc Stadium.
The game started off rough for NSU as Baylor stormed out to a 14-0 in the first quarter as Lewis and Robinson torched the Prairie Dog secondary for 99 yards and two scores. Baylor upped its lead to 21-0 early in the second on another Lewis touchdown pass, this time to Busch.
Facing embarrassment, NSU dumped starting quarterback Tony Schifano and inserted back-up Keith Stephens. Stephens led NSU down the field with Franklin adding the final 24-yards on a sweep play. Franklin would put NSU on the scoreboard again, this time on a 66-yard gallop that started between the tackles before outrunning the Bear's defense down the right sideline. Stephens included a 36-yard scoring pass to Marshall in between Franklin's touchdown runs. Franklin had 99-yards on nine carries before leaving early in the third with an injury.
Baylor scored a field goal midway through the third before taking Schifano's last pass for a 43-yard interception scoring return by Barnes.
NSU got to within three after Bates returned from a third quarter shake-up and hit Austin for a 21-yard TD pass. Stephens connected with Ruud on a 49-yard scoring strike before he threw a pick in the early fourth, leading Bates to re-enter the game.
Baylor's Cox shredded the NSU defense for 236 yards and scored just before the end of each half. Cox tore loss an 83-yard run to put Baylor back in front just before halftime and rushed 58-yards bouncing and spinning for the game's final score, ending a comeback chance the Prairie Dogs.
NSU Head Coach Ryan Ditka refused comment immediately after the game.
