NSU Falls Flat, Steamrolled by Hawkeyes

The excitement of Nebraska State's 100th Season concluded with little emotion on the field as the Prairie Dogs played flat and fell to the Iowa Hawkeyes 35-14.

As par for the course this season, NSU's first drive of the game resulted in a turnover. Tony Schifano was picked off on the Prairie Dogs first drive and Iowa quickly capitalized on a questionable scoring pass.

Iowa's Meyer hit WR Baker in the back of the end zone for an apparent score. However, replays of the catch clearly showed that Baker came down out of bounds. NSU coach Ryan Ditka tried to have the play reviewed but was denied so the touchdown stood. NSU never recovered.

NSU's Hodges fumbled the ensuing kick, but Alston intercepted a Meyer pass in the end zone and returned the ball to Nebraska State's 36 to end the threat. That pick led to Harrell's first field goal of the game on a 31-yard attempt.

The Prairie Dog defense held Iowa to one first down on the next possession, but Scott Franklin and Schifano muffed an option pitch that gave the ball back to Iowa on NSU's own 40. That turnover led to Meyer's second scoring strike, again to Baker for a clear touchdown to put NSU down 14-3 at the half. NSU was held to just 76 total yards and -11 yards rushing on five sacks in the first half.

The second half didn't provide any relief. Nebraska State fumbled Iowa's first punt of the half and again gave the ball back to the Hawkeyes again in the quarter on Schifano's fourth fumble of the game. Schifano was sacked eight times and lost 64 yards in the game. As a team, Nebraska State fumbled six times and lost four of those. Schifano and Stephens were each picked off once.

Meyer connected with McCray twice in the end zone during the third quarter while NSU had to settle for Harrell's second field goal of the day, this one from 50 yards out.

Meyer ended his day hitting McCray for a third touchdown in the fourth to put the Hawkeyes up 35-6. Schifano found Leonard minutes later for the game's final touchdown. NSU converted the two-point conversion on Franklin's run.

"It's not the way we wanted to go out," Ditka said. "We were never in sync and to top it off we kept shooting ourselves in the foot with fumbles."

"This is a proud university with a proud football tradition. We all wanted more out of this season but that is how it goes sometimes. I want to thank all of the former players for supporting us this season as well as the fans. After 100 seasons, this program is still relevant and we will win more championships in the future. We all wanted it to be this season, but we'll keep fighting on to ensure NSU's place in history." Ditka added.
