Expectations Are High

It's that time of year again. The summer is coming to an end, and the Buckeyes are getting set to take another shot at the BCS title. While the optimism is still cautious at this point - after all ,the Bucks did lose yet another BCS game last year - this may be the best Buckeye team to come along in many years, and fans are beginning to think this year might end up like 2002, with the championship trophy coming home to Columbus.

The offense will be lead by the guy everyone already knows, but Terrelle Pryor's supporting cast, if you could even call them that, are simply phenomenal. With the running back tandem of Boom Herron and Brandon Saine returning, receivers Devier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher returning also, and an offensive line that lost only one starter (RG Bryant Browning, who entered the draft as a junior), this could be the best Buckeye offense in years, or perhaps ever. Add the freakishly quick yet gigantic tight end Jake Stoneburner to the discussion, and it's a veritable embarrassment of riches for the offense.

However, that embarrassment might be outdone by the defense, which returns 8 starters, and might just possess the best defensive line in the nation. With future first-rounders Thad Gibson and Cameron Heyward as the ends, and a linebacking corps unlike anything the Big Ten has seen in a very long time, the Silver Bullets are the defense to watch in the Big Ten, and perhaps in the entire nation. Senior linebackers Tyler Moeller and Ross Homan might be the two best backers in the conference, and junior Etienne Sabino is likely in the top five. With 300+ lb DT Dexter Larimore in the middle next to pass rusher Robert Rose, this is easily the best front seven around. Lockdown corner Chimdi Chekwa and heavy hitter Jermale Hines patrol the secondary, just in case some happens to get a pass off.

This is football, and anything can happen, but the Buckeyes have all anyone could ask for to take home a Big Ten title, and they may just have enough win their second national championship of the decade. We'll just habe to wait and see.

Buckeyes Rest Starters, Pummel OU 54-7

This one got out of hand early, and simply stayed that way. The Buckeyes put up 538 yards of offense on the day, 254 in the air, and another 284 on the ground. Those yards and scores were distributed pretty evenly throughout the roster, so no one really had a big game on offense. But collectively, it was a huge day.

Defense was a different story. Senior corner Chimdi Chekwa snagged his second INT of the season, taking this one 49 yards for the game's first score. Senior defensive end Cameron Heyward notched his second and third sacks of the year while racking up six tackles, two for losses. The Silver Bullets held the Bobcats to only 206 yards of total offense, and only 65 total rushing yards.

In the first two games of his freshman season, Freshman Kasey Gilbert has delighted coaches and fans alike. With ten tackles, a forced fumble, and perhaps the hit of the year in the OU game, all in limited duty, Gilbert is quickly proving to one and all that he knows how to make plays on the football field.

Rumor has it that Coach Griffin might just work in a number of 3-4 sets on the defensive side of the ball, just to see hoe Gilbert will perform next to junior and fellow middle line backer Etienne Sabino.

"Anything's possible" coach said with a grin, but knowing coach, that smile could mean just about anything.

OSU Inks First Recruit of the Season

... and he's a good one.

Manny Beck, the sought after offensive lineman from Bowling Green, Ohio, signed with the Buckeyes today. The 273 lb high school senior was reported to have said to coach Griffin "What took you so long?" when he became the first recruit to receive an offer from OSU this year. The two will likely laugh about that for the next four years, as Beck will be coming to Columbus in the fall.

Beck is the ninth ranked offensive tackle in this year's class and is rated number 134 overall. While he has all the tools to play outside, coach may decide to capitalize on his speed in the running game by putting him at a guard spot and pulling him out to block in space. "It's all the same to me," Beck said, "I just wanna go hit somebody."

In the Big Ten, he'll get plenty of chances to do just that.

Buckeyes Assert Dominance, Shutout Navy - 45-0

Ohio State simply rolled over the Midshipmen of Navy on Saturday, stuffing the pesky option running game and giving up less than 200 yards of total offense for the game while rushing for over 300 yards on the day themselves.

Navy played a tough game, and gave it all they had from start to finish, but there was just no competing with the Buckeyes on this day. Terrelle Pryor ran for two scores, threw for two more, and the defense, led by Cameron Heyward's two forced fumbles, seven tackles, four tackles for loss, and a sack thrown in for good measure, was just too much for Navy to overcome. Valiant as they were, the outcome was never in doubt. Buckeyes in a blowout.

Next week, the Bobcats of Ohio University attempt to pull the upset in the 'Shoe.
