Texas Tested, Beat 'Boys with late surge

The trip to Stillwater is always fraught with peril. Coach Mack Brown knew his team would need to play flawless football to control the OK State offense. Someone just needed to tell them team that this was necessary in order to win.

The game began with a series of UT turnovers. McCoy would throw 5 picks on the day, easily his worst game of the season. How it happened was due to the ingenious gameplan that Mike Gundy built for the Cowboys. Texas Wide receivers were shut down all day, as OSU defensive backs jumped their routes, altered their routes, and generally made the passing game non-existent. On more than one instance, McCoy dropped back to pass, had more time in the pocket than usual, but could not depend on either Williams or Cosby to run the route expected, as OSU d-backs shut down the play. McCoy would throw the ball to where the receiver was expected to be, only to find that Reshaun Diggs or Marcus Pitt would be waiting to pick the ball. 5 picks overall to the OSU defensive secondary would effectively ground the passing game after halftime, with the score tied 7-7.

In the second half, the struggles continued as UT drove to the Oklahoma State 21 yard line, then fumbling the ball over. OSU would drive and kick a field goal, taking a 10-7 lead on the #2 team in all of college football, late into the third. Once Texas saw what needed to be done, it became the Jacob Hartman show. The standout back from Dallas would plow defenders on a 9 play, 80 yard drive that culminated in a td run to go ahead with 11 seconds to play in the 3rd quarter, 14-10.

Texas would not look back. Two offensive plays later, OSU backup QB Shane Tate would throw a fateful interception to a UT player who would bring it back 30 yards for the Longhorn touchdown. As Texas jumped out in front of OSU with 14 minutes left to play, 21-10 seemed almost to have shut the door. Indeed, for the rest of the game, Oklahoma State did not manage a first down, and basically wasted away as the running tandom of Hartman and Sullivan just drove the field and put away the game with a final of 28-10.
