Huskies overrun Vandals to start season

LOCKER THROWS FOR 200, RUNS FOR 50 IN WIN

The Washington Huskies made a surprise trip out to Idaho this year as part of a home and away series against the neighboring Vandals.

The first drive of the game saw a 54-yard touchdown pass from Jake Locker to tight end Tim Williams get the scoring started. After stopping the Vandals on the following possession the Huskies drove down a much slower path which resulted in a 2-yard touchdown run by J.R. Hasty.

The HUskies led 24-10 at halftime on the strength of a 4-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jake Locker and a field goal by Ryan Perkins.

After Locker threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Broyles to lead off the second-half scoring, the fourth quarter was the Jason Howard show. The freshman running back made two huge plays that showed off his considerable talent. From the 22 yard line Locker tried to pitch the ball to Howard on an option, but Howard let it go through his hands. The fumble counted against Locker for some reason, but Howard scooped it up without breaking stride and went 22 yard for a touchdown.

Minutes later, Howard scored on a scintillating 74-yard punt return in which he showed off his speed as well as power, outrunning one defender and breaking two tackles in switching field from right to left and spinning through the final tackle attempt before racing away from the pack.

"That was an impressive play," said Locker. "Heck, both of the plays he made were incredible but that punt return was something special."
