Huskies destrroy Wildcats in final moments

The common football refrain "closer than the final score would indicate" was certainly applicable yesterday, as the score was 23-20 with three and a half minutes to play yesterday, and 51-20 at the final gun.

The Huskies destroyed the Wildcats in the fourth quarter with a barrage of big plays on both sides of the football to run away convincingly in those final three and a half minutes. Jake Locker accounted for 319 yards of total offense and five touchdowns as the Huskies completely bottled up the Wildcats' running attack.

Washington scored at the end of a long drive to open the scoring when they were stopped and forced to kick a short field goal. After forcing a punt, Locker engineered another long drive and topped it off with a nine yard touchdown pass to J.R. Hasty.

Arizona had a great second quarter, dominating the action while picking off Jake Locker twice. They scored on a three yard touchdown run, kicked a long field goal, and also scored on a 50-yard interception return by Brandon Tatum. The Wildcats held a 17-13 halftime lead after Ryan Perkins kicked a short field goal as time expired in the second quarter.

The Huskies took the lead for good shortly into the third quarter, when Locker scrambled for 15 yards to the one yard line, then was sacked for a loss before finding his tight end on a short route back to the one yard line. Locker then plowed in from a yard out for a 20-17 lead. Ryan Perkins kicked a field goal later in the quarter after freshman corner Jonathan Butler made the second interception of his career.

With 35 seconds left in the third quarter the Wildcats kicked a 25-yard field goal and must have been feeling good to still be within striking distance. They were still within range until Jake Locker and company found their groove with five minutes to go. The Huskies scored on a 12-play drive that was capped off with a short pass from Locker to receiver Devin Aguilar, who was all alone in the back of the end zone.

The Huskies then forced a punt, and scored on a quick, well executed drive to put the game out of reach at 37-20. Ugly turned worse when quarterback Tyler Lyon completely disintegrated. He threw two interceptions on the next two drives. A quick Locker to Broyles pass then turned into a 68-yard touchdown play thanks to a great block by TE Tim Williams and a great stiff arm by Broyles. The next one was returned for a touchdown by free safety Jason Wells for a 51-20 final score.
