Lucky Jackets Outlast Georgia, Prepare For Rematch with Rutgers

November 28, 2010

Season Report Posted: January 19, 2009 04:34

2010 has been something of a charmed year for Georgia Tech. The good fortune began the second week of the season, when the Yellow Jackets faced fifth ranked Auburn in the first game of the year, allowing Tech to surprise the Tigers with an option based offense, handing them their only loss of the season. The Yellow Jackets came out on top in three overtime games, the latest to rival Georgia, because of the best game of junior quarterback Rory Pittman's career, a completely unexpected 4 touchdown performance after consecutive weeks in which backup Roland Miller rallied the team to fourth quarter comebacks over Virginia and West Virginia. In addition, Georgia Tech has survived close games against mediocre teams, most notably 3-9 North Carolina State, and that fourth quarter rally over 2-10 Virginia.

Though it wasn't always pretty, the Yellow Jackets have a compiled an 11-1 record on the season. It has all led to a Sugar Bowl rematch with Rutgers, whom the Yellow Jackets beat 34-21 in week 4. The New Year's Day game is the last for nine seniors, eight of whom started every game this season.

Taking a cue from reality, and playing to the strengths of his team, Georgia Tech head coach Patrick Kennedy installed a Flexbone attack in the offseason, and rode 375 all-purpose yards from star tailback George Williams to a 41-26 upset of 5th ranked Auburn. Williams, a preseason 1st Team All-Conference selection, carried the ball 21 times for 189 yards and two scores, caught a team-high two passes for 31 yards, had a 92 yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the opening kick, and returned three others for a total of 63 yards. Continuing a theme from last season, the Yellow Jackets struggled with turnovers, losing three fumbles and tossing two interceptions, but were saved by five interceptions by the defense and Williams' huge day.

Yellow Jackets Prepare for Difficult Schedule

Season Report Posted: January 01, 2009 18:07

The first week of the season will undoubtedly be the easiest of 2010 for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. They are guaranteed not to lose, but only because they have the week off. It is about the only sure thing in a tough schedule that features games in 12 consecutive weeks, including contests against six teams ranked in the top 25. Four of those games against ranked opponents come in the second half of the season, so the Yellow Jackets will need to get off to a good start if they are to improve on last season's 5-7 mark.
