Despite what many considered a disappointing season, Georgia Tech offered coach Kennedy a four year contract extension, which he accepted.

Georgia Tech Ends Season with Consecutive Blowouts

What better way to head into the offseason than with back to back blowout wins over rival Georgia and bowl opponent Utah?

Yellow Jackets Robbed of Fifth Win

November 6, 2011

Season Report Posted: February 14, 2009 11:05

Up 31-14 with 6:55 left in their game against Maryland, Georgia Tech looked to be on their way to evening their record at 5-5. Instead, they watched as an unbelievable sequence of events unfolded, robbing them of the win.

After kicking a field goal on the second play of the fourth quarter, Georgia Tech stopped Maryland on downs, but cornerback Darren Gibson was flagged for a questionable pass interference call. The Terrapins took advantage, driving for a touchdown. They missed the extra point, but cut the lead to 31-20 with 5:14 left.

On the next offensive play, Georgia Tech halfback Michael Barber fumbled, and Maryland recovered. Seven plays later, the Terrapins had scored again, and a successful two point conversion narrowed the gap to 31-28 with 3:17 to play.

The Yellow Jackets responded by going three plays and out, with the offensive line giving up their first sack of the day on third down. Anthony Woods pinned Maryland deep with a 51 yard punt that was downed at the seven yard line, but that only slightly delayed the inevitable. After a nine yard pass on first down, Terrapin quarterback Edgar Hodge rifled the ball over the head of middle linebacker Ben Bulman to freshman wide receiver Isaac McCoy, who caught the ball and raced the remaining 63 yards to the end zone, completing an improbable 84 yard touchdown.

Georgia Tech had one last chance with 1:20 left, but just to emphasize how ridiculous a finish this was, quarterback Rory Pittman was sacked on three consecutive plays, bringing up fourth and 21. There was no mercy even then, as senior receiver Terrence George was unable to haul in a catchable ball that would have resulted in a first down, effectively ending the game.

Yellow Jackets Salvage .500 Record at Midpoint of Season

October 9, 2011

Season Report Posted: February 09, 2009 06:44

The week one defeat at the hands of a sixth ranked Auburn team looking for revenge wasn't particularly surprising. An eight point loss to top ranked Texas was forgivable. But when Georgia Tech waltzed into Raleigh and got rolled 62-14 by NC State to fall to 2-3 on the year, it looked like the season was fast spiraling out of control, particularly with second ranked Tennessee coming to town. But although they gave up nine sacks, the Yellow Jackets won the turnover battle for just the second time all year, and quarterback Rory Pittman made just enough plays to secure a 24-17 upset over the Volunteers, salvaging a .500 record at the midpoint of the season.

Five Players Transfer in Search of Playing Time

August 1, 2011

Season Report Posted: February 05, 2009 18:04

Buried on the depth chart, five former Yellow Jackets transferred during the off season, all of them in search of more playing time. The group includes two players not recruited by Coach Kennedy, fullback Bradley Jackson and outside linebacker Martin Schneider, both of whom would have been redshirt juniors this fall. The remaining three are junior college transfers Anthony Jackson, a wide receiver, and Sean Lee, a defensive tackle, as well as redshirt sophomore Ray Wagner, a free safety. Kennedy expressed regret at losing all five.

"You never like to see a kid leave a program," he said, "but each of these guys made this decision for themselves, and I respect that. For Anthony and Sean, ACC ball was more of an adjustment than they'd expected. Bradley and Martin, those guys are hard workers, and just wanted a chance to show what they can do. Ray, his was probably the toughest to take. He was one of my first recruits when I got hired on here, but he just got caught in kind of a numbers crunch. For whatever reason, we've had unusually high interest from some pretty top flight free safeties the last couple years, and Ray felt like he was getting lost in the shuffle. I'm confident he'd have been a contributor for us, but he really wanted to get on the field as soon as he could. You can't blame a guy for that."

The loss of those five, plus nine graduating seniors left the Yellow Jackets with 14 available scholarships, all of which were filled by prep seniors this spring.
