Iowa Wins National Championship with Ease

January 8, 2012

Game Report Posted: November 24, 2008 01:37

We knew there was going to be a repeat so why even put Texas in the National Championship again with Iowa? For the FANS to ENJOY, that's why!
This wasn't even a challenge for Iowa as was the first game when they blew away Texas 58-0. At least Texas scored this time around.
Stats were ugly as Iowa had 556 yards of total offense. Rushing for 444 yards and passing for 112 yards. They were 7-14 for 3 passing touchdowns. McNutt's stats gave him a 159.3 QB Rating for the day.
Jevon Pugh was Player of the Game and it showed with his 34 attempts for 386 yards and 3 touchdowns. The longest of those runs came in the fourth quarter when Pugh had a 91 rushing yard touchdown breaking the NCAA record for longest rushing touchdown. McNutt added 58 yards on the ground and ran for 2 touchdowns.
Wide Receivers had a good day as David Blackwell caught three passes for 38 yards and a touchdown. Franklin Newby had 1 reception and a touchdown and Jonathan Gimm had a reception for 15 yards and a touchdown.
It took Iowa' Coach Pelini just three years to win a National Championship for Iowa. It might have been only two had Iowa not lost to Notre Dame the week before the Bowl game.
Final Score #2 Iowa 56 #1 Texas 10

The #2 Iowa Hawkeyes have won the Big 10 Conference all by themselves and are headed to the biggest game in college football, the BCS National Championship Game.
The Hawkeyes are even more excited about the "team" they're playing in the National Championship game. It's a team they destroyed in the regular season 58-0. It's a team that was also #1 when Iowa played them. #1 Texas will be the dessert of choice for the #2 Iowa Hawkeyes.

Their offense wasn't the only part of the team that dominated. The Iowa defense held the Longhorns to only 65 yards of total offense. -29 rushing and 94 passing.

Iowa Back Up to #1 in BCS

November 27, 2011

Season Report Posted: November 21, 2008 04:03

Iowa has moved back up to #1 in the BCS Polls with just one week left. The conference championship games are now being played and a lot of ranked teams will play each other. The biggest of them all is the Big 12 Conference where #2 BCS ranked Texas will play #4 Coaches Poll ranked Missouri for the Big 12 Title. The Hawkeyes are rooting for Missouri to beat Texas because the Hawkeyes would like to play a different team in the National Championship game than a team they have already played in the regular season.

Status Update for Iowa

November 20, 2011

Season Report Posted: November 21, 2008 04:00

Iowa has gotten a scare as they slipped down to #2 in the BCS polls. The computers have Iowa questioning whether the formulas are working or not because Iowa actually moved UP in the Coaches poll from a #3 to a #2. They stayed at #1 in Media. The confusion? When Iowa slipped a spot in the coaches poll to a #3, Iowa was a #1 in BCS, yet when Iowa moves UP in the coaches poll they slipped in the BCS poll which is made up of an average of the other poll rankings.
Currently ahead of Iowa is #1 BCS ranked Texas which Iowa played earlier in the year and won.

#2 Iowa Has Fun With #65 Minnesota

November 13, 2011

Game Report Posted: November 21, 2008 03:55

Big Ten Champions and #1 BCS ranked Iowa Hawkeyes had fun with Minnesota and it showed. Iowa rushed for 238 yards as Jevon Pugh broke the school record for most rushing touchdowns in a season with 38. Pugh had 256 rushing yards and four touchdowns but QB McNutt rushed for a -18 yards bringing the total rushing number down to 238. McNutt was very impressive with his arm as he passed for a career high, 566 yards. He also broke the school record for most passing yards in a game. McNutt had a QB rating of 250.4, threw for 26 of 37, 566 yards, 7 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. His two favorite receivers once again had some very impressive numbers as Franklin Newby had a school record for most receiving yards in a game with 361 yards. Newby also added a total of five touchdowns as one of his touchdowns came from a 45 long punt return for a touchdown. WR Pat Rogers helped QB McNutt out with 158 receiving yards and catching two for touchdowns. WR David Blackwell also had 7 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Mike Greco had an 82 yard kick return for a touchdown. Defensively, it was DT Anthony Harrison being named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week with 5 tackles, 5 for loss, 5 sacks and a forced fumble. WR Franklin Newby was named NCAA and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. Iowa had 956 total yards on the day.
Iowa has moved up to #1 in the BCS which is right where they want to be at the end of the season. They are now hoping that with their three weeks off and no conference title game that they can stay in the top 2 of the BCS in order to play in the National Championship game at the end of the season.
Iowa moved down to #3 in the Coaches Poll previously at #2 but stayed at #1 in Media which helps with their computer rankings which are figured out in the BCS rankings.
Currently, if the season were to end today, Iowa would be playing USC which are ranked #2 in BCS. As you know, Iowa has already played and beat USC this year. It was a close game with a 32-30 outcome with Iowa winning with a last second field goal. Iowa has played USC one other time, last year which they won that match easily.

#3 Iowa Wins with Ugly Numbers Over #116 Northwestern

November 5, 2011

Game Report Posted: November 21, 2008 03:43

Iowa had a season high eight turnovers but they still got the job done over a weak Northwestern. Iowa rushed for 230 yards as their leading halfback Jevon Pugh had 215 of those yards and Jevon rushed for four touchdowns. QB Marvin McNutt added 19 yards on the ground and rushed for a touchdown as well. "We didn't hold onto the ball very well as we fumbled the ball four times and we also threw five interceptions. Luckily we got one of our fumbles back but we still had eight turnovers which we need to bring down if we plan to play well in our bowl game at the end of the season," Coach Pelini added. WR Franklin Newby had 11 punt returns for 252 yards and one of those was a 59 yard return for a touchdown.
On the defensive side, DE Lebron Daniel had some impressive numbers with 10 tackles, 10 for loss, 8 sacks, and a forced fumble.
Joe Bennett was 2 for 2 in field goals and had a 48 long to add to the final score of 48-14.
Iowa has one more team to beat, #65 Minnesota. "A lot is at stake on this game. If we win, we win the Big Ten Conference, for our third year in a row I might add, and we increase our chances to play in the National Championship game at the end of the season." Pelini said.

#3 Iowa Takes Down #25 Wisconsin

October 29, 2011

Game Report Posted: November 21, 2008 03:36

The Iowa Hawkeyes can now smell the National Championship as they have two more games to play before post-season bowl games are announced.
Iowa racked up 217 rushing yards against the ranked Badgers as Jevon Pugh was their leading rusher with 166 yards and a touchdown. They prove to be a force near the endzone with their fullbacks as Iowa's FB Brian Thompson had one yard but the most important stat behind his 1 yard was one touchdown.
WR Franklin Newby gave Iowa some breathing room when he returned a punt for an 82 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Punter Joe Bennett added a field goal in the fourth to secure the win for Iowa as they went on to win, 24-14.
Next up for Iowa is an easy #116 Northwestern. But as Iowa knows, those bad teams are the ones that usually puts them to the test.

#3 Iowa Knocks Off #8 Michigan with Ease

October 22, 2011

Game Report Posted: November 21, 2008 03:30

The Iowa Hawkeyes had no trouble at Kinnick Stadium as they handed #8 Michigan with a loss easily.
The Hawkeyes rushed for 246 yards and the two that led them to those numbers were HB Jevon Pugh with 122 yards and two touchdowns and QB Marvin McNutt with 124 yards and one touchdown.
McNutt added 210 yards through the air to his favorite receivers, Pat Rogers with 129 yards and a touchdown and his other favorite, Franklin Newby who had 41 yards and a touchdown.
DT Anthony Harrison had a safety and punter Joe Bennett added two field goals to give Iowa another conference win, 42-7.
Iowa has one more tough team to get past and that is next week when they head to Wisconsin and face the #25 Badgers.

#3 Iowa To Deliver Mail?

October 15, 2011

Game Report Posted: November 17, 2008 03:32

The Hawkeyes can do it either by ground or air nowadays. You need them to deliver your mail for ya?
QB Marvin McNutt passed for 337 yards and 3 TD. His two favorite receivers, Pat Rogers and Franklin Newby helped his numbers. Newby caught for 188 yards and 2 of the 3 TD through the air and Rogers added 147 yards and the other TD.
One of two Hawkeye Heisman candidates Jevon Pugh rushed for 230 yards and added 4 TD.
The other Heisman candidate on the other side of the ball defensively, Lebron Daniel had 8 Tackles, 8 for loss and four sacks. The BIg Ten defensive player of the week though was OLB John Andrews who had 6 tackles, 2 for loss, a sack, 2 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles.
With the win, the Hawks didn't move in either the coaches or media polls but what mattered most was the NEW BCS Poll that came out and ranked the Iowa Hawkeyes at the #2 spot which means if the season were to end now, they would be playing in the National Championship game aganist Alabama. At #3, #4 and #5 were the three teams that Iowa had beaten which would make sense why Iowa was at #2 in the BCS Polls. USC landed at #3, Penn State at #4 and Texas at #5.

#3 Iowa Hosts #66 Indiana and Three Recruits

October 14, 2011

Season Report Posted: November 12, 2008 03:09

#3 in the coaches poll and #2 in the media poll, Iowa will look to hold on to that spot and increase their chance to jump back into the National Championship spotlight.
The Iowa Hawkeyes will host the #66 Indiana Hoosiers along with having three of their in-season recruits visiting.
The Hawkeyes should only have one more big game which will happen next week as a top ten ranked Michigan will visit Kinnick Stadium. If Iowa can win that game, they should stay very close in the hunt to play in the National Championship game at the end of the regular season. Iowa is also hoping that this week will be the week that #4 Penn State can beat ranked opponent Ohio State. Iowa and Ohio State are the only two teams left unbeaten in conference play. The Hawkeyes would rather not "share" the Big Ten championship if they have to. They have no hand in the matter as Iowa and Ohio State will not play each other this year, leaving it open for a share of the Big Ten championship.

#4 Iowa Wins Another One on the Road

October 8, 2011

Game Report Posted: November 12, 2008 03:03

Last week, the Hawks did some damage on the ground and this week they do somewhat damage through the air. Their QB Marvin McNutt passed for 302 yards and had two passing touchdowns. Receivers Franklin Newby and Pat Rogers were remarkeable as Newby had 145 yards and a touchdown and Rogers had 140 yards and a touchdown. Newby also returned a kickoff up the middle for an 80 yard kick return touchdown.
The Hawkeyes are another rank higher because of the #1 Clemson Tigers team losing. The Hawkeyes are now ranked #3 in the Coaches Poll and #2 in the Media. If the top two teams continue to win, the only hope Iowa has are the BCS Polls and the computer formula for them to jump the #2 team to get into the National Championship game.

#4 Iowa Visits #53 Michigan State

October 7, 2011

Season Report Posted: November 12, 2008 02:55

There are three teams that are still undefeated in the Big Ten Conference. This week, that list will be dwindled down to two. Iowa, Ohio State, and Michigan State remain unbeaten in the Big Ten and tomorrow two of those teams go head-to-head. It's #4 Iowa visiting the #53 Michigan State Spartans.
Iowa will look to try to get a win and get that much closer back into the race for the National Championship game.

A Record Day and Win

October 1, 2011

Game Report Posted: November 12, 2008 02:35

It was the biggest blowout anyone has ever seen. Records were broken and shattered by the #6 Iowa Hawkeyes. The first record to be broken was the NCAA and school record for career rushing touchdowns. Held previously by Nathan Guillroy of Iowa at 34, Jevon Pugh ended the day at 41 and there are still a lot of games to play.
The next record to be broken was school rushing touchdowns in a game. Held previously by Nathan Guillroy at 5, Jevon Pugh shattered that with having 10 rushing touchdowns on the day.
The next rushing record to be broken/shattered was the school and NCAA record for yards rushed in a game. The previously Iowa school record was held by Tavian Banks with 314 yards and the NCAA record was held by the current NFL star, LaDainian Tomlinson at 406. Jevon Pugh had 438 rushing yards on the day!
On the defensive records side, it was DE Lebron Daniel all day! He broke the game and career record in one game. The old game record for sacks was held by Iowa DE Christian Ballard with 9. Daniel shattered that by 10 ending the day with 19 sacks! The old career record both school and NCAA was also held by Christian Ballard with 60 and at the end of the day, Daniel was at 73 with a lot of games left to play.
The Iowa team as a whole were so dominate on defense that the Purdue Boilermakers were in the negative numbers. Purdue ended up with -117 yards on Total Offense, -149 Rushing Yards and were sacked a total of 30 times.
The last record to go down was at the end when Iowa ended the day with 105 points on the scoreboard.
"I think we just wanted to have some fun, break some records, and improve our chance at getting into the National Championship game." Coach Pelini stated. "I really want to coach the Hawkeyes to a win with a National Championship game so I can get over to Cedar Falls and help the program that is in dire trouble at UNI. They have been put on probation for two years. They have been stripped of all of their 25 scholarships, no tv and no bowl games for two years. I just want to get over there quickly to help them out", Pelini added. "I won't do that though until I win a National Championship game with the team I'm with. That's a promise!".

#6 Iowa to Take on #47 Purdue

September 30, 2011

Season Report Posted: November 09, 2008 23:38

The #6 Iowa Hawkeyes will look to improve their conference record to 2-0 with a win over Purdue.
The Hawkeyes will be on the road to Purdue for the first time since the season has started. "It's been five really good weeks at home, now we have to take our game on the road. It will be our first road test of the season, one which I hope we can win", Coach Pelini stated today in a news conference.
The Hawkeyes know that they could possibly move up at least two spots in the polls because of losses by two teams that were ranked in the top five. This will greatly help the Hawkeyes still have the chance to play in the biggest game at the end of the season, the National Championship Game.

#10 Iowa Hawkeyes Rebound from Loss and Beat #2 Penn State, 49-17

September 24, 2011

Game Report Posted: November 09, 2008 22:54

The Hawkeyes now are extremely focused on the chance to still play in the National Championship game. They come out and win their opening conference game against a tough Penn State Nittany Lions. The stats were impressive. Franklin Newby returned two punt returns for touchdowns and added 123 receiving yards to his stats column. QB Marvin McNutt set another personal best with a QB Rating of 244.1. McNutt was 10-15 and threw 262 yards, and 2 TD. HB Jevon Pugh had a strong day with 150 rushing yards and 2 TD. In the air it was WR Pat Rogers with 130 receiving yards and 2 TD. On the defensive side, Lebron Daniel returned from being injured for 4 weeks with 6 tackles, 2 tackles for loss a sack and a forced fumble.
With the win, the Iowa Hawkeyes moved up 4 spots in the polls to #6. When they play Purdue, they realize that they could move up at least two spots in the polls because of losses by two top five teams.

#3 Iowa Loses on a Last Passing TD to Tennessee, 30-34

September 17, 2011

Game Report Posted: November 09, 2008 22:48

The #3 Iowa Hawkeyes had thought that this was going to be a cake walk after beating TWO #1 teams in a row. They were facing a #9 team of Tennessee. The Hawkeyes kept it close all game and had a chance of putting it away at the end of the game by a missed opportunity for an interception. The next play by Tennessee was the dagger in the heart that dropped Iowa to a 30-34 loss.
Stats weren't very impressive in the game.
T. Haynes 5 Tkls (3 TFL), 3 Sks, FF
HB J. Pugh 156 Yds. 1 TD
QB M. McNutt 68 rush yds. 1 TD
QB M. McNutt 2.2 QB Rating 2-13-51yds. 3 Int
The last play came down to a 4th Down, 10 sec. left, Hawkeyes leading 30-27, Tennessee threw a passing TD covered by 3 defensive guys.
With the loss, Iowa still has a chance to make it into the National Championship game but will need some help. The Hawkeyes moved down in the polls to #10.

#6 Iowa Destroys #1 Texas, 58-0

September 10, 2011

Game Report Posted: November 09, 2008 22:42

The Hawkeyes definitely looked like a #1 team out there as they destroyed a #1 Texas team. The Hawks were led by their SR HB Jevon Pugh who had 306 rushing yards in the game and added 4 TD.
The Hawks not only looked good on the ground but they also did some damage in the air with the QB Marvin McNutt who had a personal best with a QB Rating of 196. He passed for 217 yards and a TD and was 10-15 on the day. His leading receiver was WR Pat Rogers with 5 receptions and 166 yards, averaging 33.2 yards a catch and adding 1 TD.

#13 Iowa to Take on #5 Notre Dame and Avenge Last Year's Loss

August 26, 2011

Season Report Posted: November 03, 2008 21:56

Last year the Notre Dame Fighting Irish took away at the time #1 Iowa Hawkeyes' dream to get into the National Championship game.
This year, Iowa isn't holding back by showing the country and the nation that they should be #1. And they will be if they win their first five games which are all against teams ranked at least #7 or higher.
The Hawks are picked to finish in the Big 10 at #4. The team that Iowa doesn't play this year is Ohio State so the Hawkeyes are hoping a team in the big ten beats Ohio State so that they don't have to share the Big 10 championship like they had to last year with Michigan.

Hawkeyes Have Top Recruiting Class, Start the Season at #13

August 2, 2011

Season Report Posted: November 02, 2008 23:50

During the off season the Iowa Hawkeyes had the Top Recruiting Class signing a record 11 five star recruits, 9 four stars, 3 three stars and 1 one star for a total of 24 recruits signed.
Top recruits signed for Iowa are: DT Kelly Foster, SS Mike Greco and FB Brian Thompson.
Despite having the top recruiting class and signing 11 five star recruits the Hawkeyes will start at only a #13 ranking which Coach Pelini is not very happy about. "Last year, I think we had the top recruiting class and we won our Rose Bowl by a landslide, yet we started at #14. This year, we again finish with the #1 recruiting class, we finish at a #3 at then end of last season and those assholes are starting us at #13. When the hell are we going to see some respect in the polls? I doubt it will ever happen unless our team name is Florida, USC, or Florida State."
