Louisville Comes Back Big 62-44,Kentucky Too "Little" Too Late!

The #11 Louisville Cardinals 2-1 arrived in Lexington,Ky.to battle the unranked Kentucky Wildcats 2-1 and take home the Governor's Cup for the 5th straight year.The weather was perfect for football with a clear sky and 45,000 screaming fans wearing blue and red.

The Kentucky Wildcats had a chip on their shoulder from the opening kickoff coming into the game with nothing to lose and everything to gain.Kentucky's QB Andre Woodson connected a 12 yard pass on the first drive of the game to wide receiver Dicky Lyons Jr. for the first touchdown of the game.Louisville was held to a 4th and long punt and had to try and stop the Cats from scoring again.Kentucky drove into field goal range setting up kicker Lones Seiber for 20 yard field goal and an early 10-0 Kentucky lead.

Louisville's Victor Anderson immediately returned the favor and returned a 95 yard kick off return for the Card's first points of the game.The Wildcats were determined to keep Louisville trailing.Andre Woodson threw his second touchdown pass finding Jacob Tamme in the end zone on a 14 yard play action pass as Tamme came down with the 1 hand grab for 6.Kentucky lead the entire first quarter and ended it 17-7.

Louisville's QB Brian Brohm couldn't get the passing game on track so Head Coach Moose Linville mixed up the plays as promised in a press conference.Cardinal running back George Stripling followed a big lead block from Brock Bolen and scored a 33 yard touchdown putting the Cardinals back in reach 17-14.

Andre Woodson impressed NFL Scouts by throwing another touchdown bomb to Dicky Lyons Jr. for 52 yards lighting up the scoreboard 24-14 Kentucky.Louisville's Trent Guy later returned a punt for a 79 yard touchdown showing weakness in the Kentucky special teams defense and giving the Cards new life once more 24-21.With only 35 seconds remaining in the second quarter Brock Bolen bulldozed his way into the end zone on an 11 yard touchdown strike putting the Cardinals up 24-28.

Louisville had a roughing the passer penalty on the last play of the half giving the Cats 1 more chance to score with 0 seconds left on the game clock.Andre Woodson felt no pressure as he found a blown coverage in Louisville's secondary and hit wide receiver Keenan Burton 53 yards for a touchdown and a half time lead 31-28.

Kentucky Head Coach Rich Brooks had all the momentum in his favor to start the second half.Ky running back Rafeal Little scored on the very first drive of the 3rd quarter with a 28 yard touchdown run stiff arming Louisville defenders who got in his way.Andre Woodson found Dicky Lyons JR. for the 3rd and final time on a 5 yard slant into the end zone for another Wildcat touchdown 44-28 after a blocked extra point by Preston Smith his 3rd block on the season.

Louisville's Special Teams once again proved Kentucky has weakness with a 94 yard kick return touchdown by Trent Guy.Louisville kicker Art Carmody nailed a 25 yard field putting the Cards closer in reach of Kentucky 44-38.

The 4th quarter was nothing but the Cardinals taking advantage of a tired Wildcat defense.Louisville running back George Stripling scored 2 more touchdowns 1 for 3 yards and 1 for 60 yards.Art Carmody kicked another field goal this time from 35 yards and Trent Guy returned a a 72 yard punt for a touchdown to once again beat the tired Kentucky special teams 62-44.

"This game was exactly what I expected coming from a rivalry
of this magnitude.""We came in with a plan to win and managed to do just that.""We Start the Big East next week against Syracuse and hope to build on this win from tonight."Louisville Head Coach Moose Linville told on field reporters after the final seconds ticked away.

"Andre Woodson is a special player.""He had us guessing all night long and I wish him the best of luck in the future.""I look forward to many more battles like these in our next level careers."Kentucky is a tough team and I had trouble throwing against this secondary all night long.""They'll be one of the teams to beat in the SEC from what they showed us tonight."Brian Brohm told The Lexington Harold Newspaper reporters.

The #11 Cardinals took home the Governor's Cup and celebrated a hard fought victory going 2-1 in non conference games.Louisville will face the Syracuse Orange @ Syracuse for their Big East Conference opener.More news at a later date.
