Tigers Upset #7 Navy!

With starting quarterback Gordon Clark being held out of the first half of the game due to violation of the team's academic policy, true Freshman Alex Bonnett got his first start by being thrown into the fire. He would be facing the #7 Navy Midshipmen. The Midshipmen are led by Heisman favorite, quarterback Neil Pierre.

Bonnett responded postively leading the Tigers to two touchdown drives in the first half and a 14-7 halftime lead. The first was at the end of the first quarter, where Bonnett led the team down the field. He converted two third and long situations on the drive, one of which ended the season for a teammate. Tight end Steve Dennis caught a third and 9 pass for a first down, and in the process dislocated his shoulder. A big loss for the team, Dennis was a good outlet and there is very little depth behind him. Ultimately, Bonnett connected on a 19 yard pass to Ryan Bowman for the first points of the game.

Navy responded with a 4 minute drive that ended a 2 yard touchdown run. Bonnett responded by once again driving the length of field and finding Keron Jefferson in the end zone from 7 yards out. They ended the first half with that, and a 14-7 lead.

The third quarter, brought the return Gordon Clark. First the Navy offense received and shortly broke a 50 yard touchdown run. Alex Bonnett remained the starter, and did not get a first down. Neil Pierre threw his first touchdown of the game and brought Gordon Clark to the field.

Clark's drive ended in Memphis territory when Clark threw a interception. Navy scored again just before the end of the third quarter. On the extra point attempt, starting left outside linebacker Kyle Williams broke through and blocked the point.

Clark returned again, and went on a two and a half minute drive. He led the offense with effective running and capped the drive with a 10 yard pass to fullback Brandon Monroe.

Oliver Prudence had his Tigers down just 6 points with 2:35 left the game. He even still had all three timeouts. He didn't need them though. The Navy's first play of the posession was its last, as senior cornerback Sam Montegomery intercepted an errant Neil Pierre pass. With that the Tigers offense would return to the field with more than two minutes on the clock and on the Midshipmen's 42 yard line.

The offense returned to it's bread and butter, the running game. Half back Desi Carey, along with Clark, picked up a first down on the ground, and a quick pass to Ryan Bowman got the ball to the 10 yard line. From there Gordon Clark ran the ball in on a qb sweep. With the extra point, the Tigers where only 1:35 from knocking the #7 team in the nation off at home.

And they would. A swift second later and senior free safety Ron Guerrero grabbed an interception and gave Neil Pierre his third of the day. With that win the Tigers are now guaranteed to go .500 for the season. Neil Bonnett was the announcer's player of the game, but no question the game ball goes to linebacker Kyle Williams. He had a team high 6 tackles, a interception, and the difference in the game, the blocked extra point.

Final Score: Memphis 28, Navy 27
