The Weather and Illinois Pour Down on Michigan
It some very nasty weather in Ann Arbor, where the temperature at kickoff was just above freezing and rain was pouring down, the Illini thumped Michigan 48-31. Michigan did everything they could to help Illinois win the game by handing them 6 turnovers. Five of those turnovers resulted in 27 points for Illinois. Each of those turnovers also resulted in a defensive td or excellent starting field position in Michigan territory. The Michigan defense which has played pretty well so far this saeson, couldn't stand up to the challenge as they allowed Illinois to score 5 td's and 2 fg in 7 red zone attempts. Steven Threet was picked off 4 times before be pulled. The worst performance by far for Threet this year. He threw a pick on his first pass of the game leading to the first points of the game. Then in the second quarter he get picked for six. Next pass after that picked again. Coach RR said after the game "He had a rough day out there, I understand the weather is bad, but he just has to make better decisions with the football. Threet also took back to back sacks on a crucial drive which forced the Wolverines to take a long FG attempt that was missed. Michigan also lost their their only offensive spark on the first play of the second half. McGuffie got his legs taken out from him and fumbled the ball. He left the game with shin splints. Benn had a killer game for Illinois recording 3 td passes and key first down pick ups. Michigan will look to get back on track vs Toledo next week.
Some of the visiting recruits were seen shaking their heads a lot during the game. One recruit was overheard saying "This is real disappointing showing by the Wolverines." He was right.
