Spartans Balanced Attack Beats #24

The Michigan State Spartans scored 31 straight to beat up on #24 Cal 37-14 to open the season. The Spartans totaled 380 yards of offense, using a confusing attack that the Bears couldn't stop.

HB A.J. Jimmerson ran 31 times for 150 yards and a score, showing that 2009 could be a big season for the Senior. He also caught two touchdown passes, as the Spartans opened up the playbook to include a lot more pass plays.

QB Connor Dixon was 15 of 21 for 220 yards, with three touchdowns and an interception.

WR T.J. Williams had 3 catches for 65 yards, while the TE trio of Charlie Gannt, Orlando Page, and Michael Morris had 5 catches for 103 yards.

"We're going to give defenses fits all year if our tight ends are able to sustain this play. When you line up in twin tight end sets, and even sometimes three tight end sets, you have to play for the run but then we'll go over the top to our speedy targets. It's dangerous if you plan it right," stated Dr. P.

The Spartans appeared to have a cocky swagger after coming back down 14-6 to the Bears offense that looked like it might score at will. The defense buckled down, and things look very promising if the defense sustains its high level of play.

Freshman SS George Colbert looked outstanding, recording 7 tackles and a fumble recovered. He was always around the ball.

The Spartans are set to travel back across the country to take on the Connecticut Huskies next week.
