Pokes win season opener

The Wyoming Cowboys (1-0) seem to be running on all cylinders and started the 2008 season in style running over the Virginia Cavilers (0-1) 59-21.

With a talented young team at his disposal, Coach T looks at this season as a chance for Wyoming to make a name for itself.

"We've got a great team this year. With all but three starters back on offense, and a talented young defense, we should turn some heads this season, and I think we started off on the right foot here today."

Red-shirt Freshmen Travis Burkhalter and James Davis had good debuts as Burkhalter led the receiving corps with 72 yards and a touchdown, and Davis added 65 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

Leading the defense was returning DE Mitch Unrein. Unrein, who had a monster breakout year last year with 18 TFL and 10 sacks, started his 2008 campaign off with 4 TFL including 3 QB sacks. Unrein also added 2 fumble recoveries. True Freshmen Jermaine Blount, David Nichols, and Tom Merriman each had impressive debuts for the Pokes. Blount and Nichols each had an interception, while Blount added a sack, and Merriman had one interception along with a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

"That was amazing. I never scored a touchdown in high school, and then to come in here and get one in my first game in college is just awesome," said Merriman.

SR Wynel Seldon led the offense on the ground with 68 yards and a TD and JR Karsten Sween finished with 216 passing yards and 4 TD.
