The Big Mo'

AKRON, Ohio (AP) - It's funny how things can change on one play. For example, Boise State's hook and lateral led to a thrilling overtime finish last year in Glendale. Often times, that particular play gives a team a spark, the will that's needed to win.

After a quiet first half, in which Army held a 3-0 lead until just over a minute to go in the second quarter, Coach Ghettoshark and his Army Black Knights (0-1) thought they had that spark when LB Frank Scappaticci returned an Akron fumble 39 yards for a score. The score gave his team a 10-7 advantage coming into the second half...but it wasn't meant to be.

A mere few plays later, Akron WR Marcus Patterson would be in the right place a the right time, picking up his teammates fumble and scampering past two fallen Black Knights who were scrambling for the loose ball. That score would be the start of 31 unanswered points by the Zips, who weren't slowed down by an injury to starting QB Chris Jacquemain. By the time the Black Knights finally got it together again, there was under a minute left in the game and an Army quarterback switch had been made.

"We just didn't execute. We won the turnover battle, but when you can't move the ball forward, you're not going to come out on top," said Ghettoshark. "One play that I'm particularly upset about is that catch-fumble-TD by [Akron]. We had just forced a fumble, and had two guys in the vicinity to pick it up. Instead, we played sloppily and seemed to gladly hand the momentum back to them."

It had been speculated that Sophomore Carson Williams might eventually take over for Senior David Pevoto because of his superior mobility, given the state of the Black Knight's offensive line. A switch to the 3-4 was also predicted by some college football analysts, which was confirmed during the game.

Regarding the QB switch, Ghettoshark said "...we seemed to have more success passing the ball with [Williams] since he was able to outrun some of the pass rush, but the blocking has to get better. 12 sacks? That's not even funny. That's all I have to say."

The Black Knights look forward to get their season back on track with a win against D-1AA Rhode Island next week.
