Reality Check
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (AP) - When you blow out your past 2 opponents by a score of 121-41, it's only natural to have high expectations. So it's easy to see why the Army Black Knights (2-2) thought that they could win at #19 Boston College (4-0). Instead, they got a dose of reality.
It all started with a 61 yard run by Boston College's Andre Callender. However, after an Army punt pinned the Eagles within their own 5, Frank Scappaticci recorded a safety to give the Black Knights some hope. That hope would be short lived however, as a series of Boston College scores made it 27-2 in the middle of the second. But, just maybe, miracles do happen. With 1:43 left in the quarter, Brandon White took back a Matt Ryan interception to make it 27-9. That interception would be the first of five thrown by the star QB on the day, but he would throw for a score just as the half ended. QB Carson Williams would leave for the Black Knights due to an unspecified injury, but he would come back in the fourth.
After holding Boston College to a field goal on their first possession of the third quarter, things would be quiet until Jamal Robinson make it once again a three possession game. Again however, the score would be answered by Matt Ryan, who threw his fourth and final touchdown pass of the day. After Army QB Carson Williams was given the OK by the team trainer, he led a drive down the field which ended with him scampering into the endzone from 11 yards out with 4 minutes to go.
Just maybe, there was a glimpse of hope for Coach Ghettoshark and his Black Knights. After kicking the ball off again, Matt Ryan would be intercepted once again by John Laird, who took it all the way to make it a two possession game. For a moment, it looked like the Black Knights would pull off the impossible and come from behind to stun the Eagles. One could faintly hear Al Michaels screaming, "Do you believe in miracles?" Boston College would march up to the 38 before getting denied on 3rd down. K Billy Bennett came out to attempt a unlikely 55 yard field goal with 3:11 left. If he missed, Army would have over three minutes to score and make it a one possession game. The kick was up...and
...No good! Just short! But an Army player was caught jumping the snap a second early, and Bennett would come back out for the 51 yarder. This time, it was true. After stalling on the next drive on 4th down, the Black Knights' seemingly lost all hope of the miracle. And as if to add insult to injury, a 4 yard Andre Callender rush would put the Boston College Eagles up the final score of 54-30.
"We just weren't good enough. We forced [Ryan] into making poor decisions, picking him off 5 different times, but when you have a team that's just flat out better, 99% of the time that team will win. We gave it our all, and if it weren't for a mistake on a routine kick block, there's a good chance we would of come out of here as winners. These kids should be proud of their effort," said Ghettoshark.
The Black Knights play Temple (1-3) next week.
