Wildcats survive Cyclones 33-28

Game Notes

  • Senior backup quarterback Dylan Meier left the game in the third quarter and did not return. X-rays showed a broken collar bone and he is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

  • Freshman third-string quarterback Carson Coffman left the game late in the third quarter with a concussion and did not return.

  • The loss of Meier and Coffman left the Wildcats without a quarterback to play with freshman starter Josh Freeman already out with a broken finger. Senior receiver and emergency QB Jordy Nelson was also out with a dislocated elbow. That left the 'Cats scrambling to find someone to run the offense. Sophomore receiver Cedric Wilson volunteered to run the option, which KSU had not really practiced all season. Wilson took over early in the fourth quarter with KSU down by one and led the 'Cats on a 16-play drive that took up almost the entire quarter. Wilson did not throw one pass, running a couple of options but mostly handing off to one of the running backs. K-State took the lead with 1:20 left in the game on a 15-yard run by senior tailback Carlos Alsup.

  • The game featured five lead changes, the most for a KSU game this season.

  • The Wildcats scored on all four (two touchdowns and two field goals) possessions inside the red zone. They have scored 85% of the time inside their opponents 20-yard line tying them for first in the Big 12 (Missouri).

  • K-State ran for 236 yards on a season-high 47 carries. It was the fourth time this season the Wildcats have managed over 200 yards rushing but the first since week three against Marshall (season-high 315).

  • KSU did not punt for only the second time this sseason (week one vs. Illinois St.) and held the ball for a season-high 18:16 (65% of the possession time).

  • Before being injured, Meier threw for a a Wildcats' season-high and a personal career-high 263 yards (249 10/9/04 @ Kansas) on eight-of-12 passing with two touchdowns and an interception. It was Meier's second-straight game over 200 yards (213 @ Missouri last week).

  • Senior tailback Thomas Clayton ran for 119 yards on 25 carries, his sixth 100-yard game of the season. That ties him for fourth most 100-yard games in a season in K-State history (J.J. Smith,1994 and Issac Jackson, 1972).

  • Clayton now has 1,200 yards rushing on the season ranking fifth most in school history. He needs only 64 yards to pass Josh Scobey (2001) for fourth on the list. The school record is 1,986 by Darren Sproles in 2003.

  • Senior receiver Jermaine Moreira caught three passes for 114 yards recording only the second 100-yard receiving game of the season for Kansas State (Yamon Figurs had 115 last week @ Missouri).

  • Senior placekicker Jeff Snodgrass converted both of his field goal attempts (27 and 41 yards) making him a perfect 6-for-6 on the season.
