Cougars give up after stiff resistance early

Provo, Utah, was rocking early in the game. The noise was so loud that players were unable to hear the audible. With Richmond impact receiver John Smith out of the game due to team rules issues, and facing a Brigham Young 3-3-5 defense, the Spiders opted to go to their I-formation running game early on. And it worked. After ten straight runs got UR to the BYU 3, a surprise pass from Buck Roberts to tight end Matt Harvey scored the touch.

BYU drove deep on their first possession, but on first and goal RE RoShawn Moss stripped the ball away from the Cougar QB and DT Aaron Harris recovered. A tense drive followed - crowd noise going nuts - and the Spiders had to overcome a clipping penalty and a 3rd and long. BR was up to the task as he connected with receiver Jared Stephens to move the chains and Richmond soon was up 14-0.

Again the Cougars drove deep, but three big tackles for loss moved the ball back and BYU settled for a field goal. Freshman TE Matt Harvey took over the game on the next 3 possessions as the Spiders continued to pull away. Late in the 3rd quarter, freshman RE RoShawn Moss set a new NCAA single season sack record with his 25th sack. Moss had 4 on the night, two of those coming out of a 4 man front.
