Tide Survives Cajun Scare in Bayou

#1 Alabama (9-0) is A+ across the board. We are #1 in pts/gm, #7 in total offense, and #1 in total defense. #3 LSU (8-0) has a B+ offense, a B defense, and is B+ overall. They are #5 in pts/gm, #20 in total offense, and #29 in total defense.

We are 6-0 in conference and LSU is 5-0 in conference. If we win this game, we'll go to Atlanta for the SEC Championship. If LSU wins, we'll have to hope they lose their final two SEC games against Ole Miss and Arkansas and win our game against Auburn. Arkansas at 4-2 in conference could conceivably make it to Atlanta, but some very weird things would have to happen. LSU would have to beat us and then LSU would have to lose to Ole Miss and Arkansas. Arkansas would have to win out and have us lose against Auburn. However, I think this would still put LSU in the SEC Championship game since they haven't been there since the first part of the century. Weather: Clear.

LSU QB Schultz throws a 9 yard TD pass to TE Bush, 7-0 Tigers. LSU QB Schultz throws a 21 yard TD pass to WR Brown, 14-0.

K Dennis Larkins blasts a 48 yard FG, 14-3 Tigers. LSU HB Edwards scores on a 36 yard TD run, 21-3 Cajuns. K Larkins barely misses about a 49 yard FG late in the 2nd quarter.

QB Rob Sims throws a 6 yard TD pass to FB Tim Cox, 21-10 Tigers with 4:01 left in the 3rd. QB Sims options his way into the endzone from 9 yards out. He then passes to FB Cox for the two point conversion to make it 21-18 LSU with 1:30 left in the 3rd quarter. LSU KR Scott immediately returns the ensuing kickoff 102 yards while breaking 6 tackles, 28-18 LSU just :12 later.

HB Nick Brown breaks loose on a 51 yard run off the right side, 28-25 LSU with 5:37 left in the game. The Alabama defense forces a punt. #26, HB Brown, goes around the left side, jukes at the 5, and drags a tackler into the endzone for a 26 yard TD run with :55 left in the game, 32-28 Tide. First lead all day. LSU drives and they get to about midfield with :25 left. The Tide pressure is intense. The LSU QB heaves it up for his WR, but freshman FS Daniel Mitchell who was replacing the injured FS Tim Hopkins picks off the pass. We run out the clock and survive in the bayou.

This game was incredibly close. We couldn't do much of anything right in the first half. We did a little better in the second half even though we still struggled. We were lucky to win this one. With this victory we win the SEC West and will go to Atlanta to face either Kentucky or Georgia. Both teams are at 5-2 in conference. Georgia still has to play South Carolina. Kentucky has the inside track as they beat Georgia earlier in the season.
