ALMOST PERFECTLY WRIGHT, BAYLOR CRUISES TO 3-0
As the Baylor faithful was heading to their cars late Saturday afternoon on a hot day in Waco, you could hear the faint murmurs from the fans. "Man, did you see how close that was?" "I can't believe he missed that!" "So close, oh so close..."
What on earth could they be talking about? Certainly not their beloved Bears. They just witnessed one of the most complete gams by the Bears, a total domination over in-state UTEP. A win that moved Baylor to 3-0 on the year before starting conference play and getting that much closer to being ranked.
No, the Baylor fans were talking about a Guy Wright pass early in the 2nd qtr. A corner route by David Gettis that Wright slightly overthrew & despite every attempt by the 6-4 All-American WR to reel it in, it landed about 5 yards out of bounds. Why were they discussing an insignificant incomplete pass? Especially since on the very next play, Wright connected with Mikail Baker on almost the same route for a TD.
The reason why was because that 1 miscue was the difference between near perfection and total perfection. Wright would go on to hit on his next 12 passes, finishing 16 of 17 for the day with 3 passing TDs & adding one on the ground. And the fans were focusing on the 1 incompletion because they came so close to seeing history, a virtual perfect game by a QB. Instead they settled for a 1 hitter. Not too shabby, but not historical.
