Suprise Victory Overshadowed by Scandal

Welcome to Hits 105.5 "Awake with Wake," this is Charlie Gase hosting, here with Demon Deacons coach, Matt Casey.

Gase: Coach how did this week's game feel, what was the strategy?

Casey: "Well to tell you the truth Charlie, I really wasn't expecting victory in this one. Ole Miss was 2-1 and had beaten a good Kentucky team 24-13 the week before. Meanwhile, we had lost to Duke and Syracuse. However, we were able to practically dominate this game. Ball control was the key. Our offense was steller. We had a TOP of 3 out of the 4 quarters of the game, giving Ole Miss only 4 minutes with the ball. We didn't turn the ball over, and when we got within the 35 I determined that we were in "scoring position." In practice this week we discovered that Kicker #38 had quite a leg. I hadn't even heard of special teams until Wednesday at practice. This kid is automatic. So whenever we got anywhere inside our opponent's 35 yard line we would rush the ball up the middle with Andrews or Mauk and make sure that we could kick a field goal through the posts. That was the key. Also, ingenious play calling took place on defense. We only called Nickle and Dime sets with the mentality being to prevent the "big play" by Ole Miss. It's simple, have at least 1 more DB on the field than your opponent and you won't get beat deep. We stumbled onto 35 points, it felt great."

Gase: What about the events that happened through the week?

Casey: "Well Chuck, if you're referring to TE #97, then yes, there was an incident. Prior to kickoff we had to suspend TE #97 3 games for breaking team rules. TE #97 had been to a strip club with some buddies on Friday night and got into an altercation with a few Duke players. Shots were fired and a fight took place outside of the club. Wake Forest is currently conducting their own investigation to the happenings of Friday."

Gase: Do you think this may be related at all to the sex tape you made available to your team involving ESPN's Erin Andrews?

Casey: "Of course not, Erin is no stripper. What a ridiculous question."

Gase: Sorry coach.

Casey: "You're damn right sorry. Keep this crap up and I'll release my own statements again."

Gase: Agh humm, moving on. What is your gameplan for next week?

Casey: "We've already taken some precautions to the game against Tennessee. For instance, we have scheduled tours of the Shiloh Civil War Battlefied, and Graceland, former home of Elvis Presley. More importantly, we've hired a team of trained psychologists, some of North Carolina's best, in preperation for the mental anguish and suicidal tendency that will no doubt be a result of our game with Tennessee. We're going to get pounded Charles. We'll attempt our same strategy against Tennessee that we implemented against Ole Miss, but there is just no way in hell that we're winning this game."

Gase: Optimistic as usual. One more event happened, which unfortunately clouded your win in this game coach, care to explain it to our viewers?

Casey: "Well sure Gase. With about 2 minutes left in the game, the score was 28-14 and Ole Miss had the ball. It was 4th down and the Rebels threw an out play just past the 4th down marker and it was clearly out of bounds, by about 5 yards.. I mean it was on the other side of the out of bounds line. The ball was caught, but out of bounds. The play was ruled as caught, we challenged naturally as I shit myself from the call made by Stan Evans. As all 70 000 fans in the stadium groaned at the sight of the replay knowing the ball was out of bounds we knew it'd be overturned. But it wasn't, the play stood after Stan spent 2 minutes in the replay booth. The spread for the game was 10 points, and it was later revealed on Tuesday that Evans has been involved in gambling on college football games as a game official. A huge scandal has taken place in college football. How many have been betting, how long has this been going on? Some have looked at the tape. For example, the 2002 national championship game where pass interference on Ohio State was clearly not called in the endzone in overtime as Ken Dorsey through the ball into the endzone to Kellen Winslow, Evans made the call. This truly isn't good for college football."

Gase: Not good at all, what an awful occurence. Well, that's all the time we have here for "Awake with Wake" here on the Hits... as always coach it's been a pleasure. See ya next time!
