Pokes look primed for Big XII title run

"I will start by saying this. This is the best team we've had in the four seasons I've been here. With that being said, the road is much much tougher, though. There's a big difference in the Mountain West and the Big XII."

Those were the words of a very optimistic Coach T after his team's 66-0 thumping of Idaho in the 2010 season opener for the Wyoming Cowboys.

It seemed as if even Wyoming's second teamers could be starters after the Cowboys could do no wrong on Saturday. Daruis Terry started at HB and finished with 113 yards and 2 TD and James Davis added 84 and a TD. Antonio Rossner, who stepped in for the injured Leroy Williams, threw one interception, but that was the only blemish on an otherwise spotless debut for the Freshman signal caller. He finished with 209 yards and 4 TD on the day and added another 30 yards on the ground.
"Antonio is a very special player for this football team. To step in as a Freshman on the second play of the game and lead the offense like he did, this kid is something else. As big as he is, and the way he can scramble, I like our chances against anyone."
The TE position became one of the best positions for the Cowboys last year and it certainly hasn't dropped off this year. All four TE on the roster garnered at least one catch tonight and they racked up 4 of the teams 5 TD passes.
"As I said last year, our TE could be the best in the country. With Calvin (Fisher) coming in and playing as he has in fall practice and in the game tonight, I would say that we are better this year than last. Our offensive line is special, too. Overall it is a very young unit with 5 true freshmen getting some PT tonight, but I like our mix of upperclassmen with those young guys."

Defensively, the Pokes picked up this season where they left off the last. Holding the Vandals to -17 yards of rushing and only 42 total offensive yards is a great start to the season.
"We've got some key guys that are back and when you mix them in with some of the new blood, this defense is probably better than last years."
That is scary considering the 2009 Wyoming defense finished in the top 8 nationally in every defensive category. With defensive captain Tom Merriman back, but playing OLB this year instead of MLB, it gives a chance for Soph James Rice to have a breakout year.
"James is such a great talent we had to get him on the field somehow, so by moving Tom to OLB, that opened up a spot for James. This will help out the team in the long run. We started two true FR at DT today and I liked the way they played. We are expecting big things out of these two young men and so far, they've shown that they can live up to our expectations."

The road will be tough, but do the Cowboys have what it takes to succeed in the Big XII conference? Stay tuned to find out.
