Well our goal is to march into the "12th man" and steal a victory. Can we do it? I doubt it quite frankly. I just wanna keep it close.
After kicking off to the Aggies and bending but not breaking we were able to stop their opening drive. After a horrible punt return by Foster we take over. McGraw starts by handing it off to Covington for a solid gain. We continue to have success running while mixing in the short pass. We make it all the way to the 27 yard line and I'm starting to think upset. McGraw then runs a nice option, even breaking a tackle, as he is getting tackled he has a momentary lapse of judgement and coughs up the ball. TAMU recovers. [down]
We continue to have decent success on defense. We held them to a three and out and got the ball back. By now it's the second quarter. Now the defense has made addjustments to the run. We are stopped our first two plays for no gain. So, we try a play action pass. Good thing we did. Max McGraw was able to connect with Reggie McCutchen for 75 yards and the TD. Woooo! I can feel the air deflate from this A&M crowd.
We kickoff feeling pumped and ready to go. We stop A&M on their first two plays. Alright, lets go D! Oh crap, on third down McGee hits Schroeder with a 69 yard bullet. Grrr...Stupid Phillip Edwards(the corner who got burnt) you're in the doghouse now.
We proceed to go three and out after getting the ball back. When they get it back they pick our defense appart. Leading to a 6 yard TD run by Lewis. Well, there goes the upset.
We get the ball and go three and out again. Ugh. The Aggies again tear us up driving to into the redzone. Due to lack of time they kick the field goal and sends us to the locker room.
The second half starts well with us going on a long time consuming drive. It ends with Max McGraw getting his second passing TD of the day with a 27 yarder to Chris Ashkouti(his only catch of the day).
Our defense grows their balls back and holds the Aggies to a three and out. We take back over and continue to dominate. Chris Covington runs very well this drive helping us move quickly. A long pass to Jayson Foster puts us in striking range. We make the most of it with yet another TD pass. This time MLB Vincent J. Vaiano, playing as the backup TE, makes the 9 yard grab. Maybe we will pull this out. GSU 21- TAMU 17.
We kick the ball to them to start the 4th quarter. They put together a string of plays but is unable to get any points. We do the same. They get the ball back knowing now is the time to do something. On second down they make us looks stupid, running a sweep Lewis takes untouched 69 yards for the TD.(I spend ten minutes figuring out a way to blame this on Phillip).
The only thing they did wrong was leave plenty of time on the clock. We take the ball and string together a nice run of completions. Due to horrible blocking we had no time to throw. It's a miracle we were able to get into scoring distance. Max McGraw came through yet again connecting with McCutchen one more time for the 28 yard TD. *[i]Words of victory unable to be translated[/i]*
We give them the ball back with alittle over a minute left. Here's what they did. The first play they spread us out but ran it up the middle on a QB draw for a 5 yard gain(clock still running-CST). McGee hurries to the line and fires a bullet to Franks for 14 yards(CST). They hurry back and hit Bennett on two consecutive passes for 10 total yards. Timeout Aggies(1 left). McGee fires another pass right through the middle of the field(incomplete). He spreads us out and runs a HB dive up the gut(2 yards). Timeout Aggies(none left). They're sitting on our 45 yard line getting ready to explot a weakness in the D. McGee throws again(incomplete). He gets impatient and runs the same play for yet another incompleteion. Five seconds left, this is it the final play. McGee drops back with great protection and looks to his right(Phillip's side). He pump fakes and looks left. By now the pressure is starting to get on him. He steps up in the pocket and heaves a bullet at Phillip's WR. It's just him and Phillip. If he catches it they win. Phillip jumps as the WR does and gently flicks the ball to the turf. GAMEOVER!!!! WE WIN!!!! WE WIN!!!!
Pure pandemonium erupts from the Eagle bench. We went into Kyle Field and upset Texas A&M. Now, not a big feat for alot of schools. But, for a new 1-A school we'll take any win we can get. Soaked in Gatorade I jog to mid-field to shake Franchione's hand. We make small talk and say our "good games". I guess I'll have to let Edwards out of the dog house. I stand there for a moment letting the feeling soak in. Next week is Georgia Tech and they will be twice as good as this A&M team.
