On The Schedule: Army W 30-21

All Quiet in Week 1

Weekly Report Posted: May 10, 2024 13:25

No news has been reported this week.

IT WAS A DONE DEAL WHEN
CB James Parrish -- forced up one slot to the 4th CB on the depth chart thanks to an injury to Jason Mason -- made a game-clinching tackle just short of the first down marker when Army went for it on 4th and 8 on their final possession. We later tacked on a FG to put icing on the victory, but the game wasn't over until they turned it over on downs late in the fourth when they were only down by six points.

GAME BALLS
Freshman QB John Powell played well as he won his first start, despite a 21-3 deficit at the half. His only real lowlights were a fumble that came thanks to an unblocked blitzer, and a bad decision on an interception in the redzone. Not too bad, overall, though. ... Sophomore CB Nick Stanley had to step in when Jason Mason got injured early in the game. He responded with an interception and two pass deflections.

KEY STATISTICS
Army's run defense was stellar, constantly blowing up our o-line. Our #2 HB Aaron Baker had 10 carries for zero yards (including a long run of 10, so you can imagine how many negative plays they were forcing). They certainly made us rely more on the passing game than we ever intended.

NOTES
John Powell's 267 passing yards actually were good enough for 9th on our list of top single-game passing performances. ... K Carey Gipson tied his own school record for most field goals in a game, with 3 successful 3-pointers.
