Handing Over the Reigns
Everyone knew Andrew Brewer's days at quarterback were numbered. He had a 4:13 TD:INT ratio, and was completing only about 55% of his passes. Miraculously, he was still leading the Northwestern Wildcats to a 5-3 record, with one more win needed to be bowl eligible.
Saturday's contest against Purdue figured to be Brewer's last chance, as Purdue ranked in the bottom-10 teams in every major category, both offensively and defensively.
"Andrew's been our man all year, but if he continues to play like this, we may have to look another direction," Coach Taylor said on Thursday.
That other direction would presumably be Mike Kafka, while there is also a chance it would be Redshirt-Junior Jamaal Richardson.
As it turns out, a change was needed. Brewer threw 1 TD to 3 INT's in the first half against the Boilermakers, where Purdue jumped out to a 21-0 lead mid-way through the second. Mike Kafka entered and went 10/13 for 119 yards and 2 TD's, along with 1 Interception which came on his second throw. "Once I settled down, I was fine," said Kafka afterwards.
