Wildcats Allow 30 Points in Fourth to Lose Heartbreaker
Going into the 4th quarter, the Northwestern Wildcats were demolishing the Penn St. Nittany Lions by a score of 29-13. Andrew Brewer had 1 TD to 0 INT's, and The Wildcats had forced 5 Nittany Lions turnovers. It all meant nothing in the final 15 (okay, 7) minutes of the game.
Pat Devlin, the Penn St. Quarterback, put on a clinic in the fourth quarter, until he got injured that is, when the backup Quarterback, Carl Lumpkin, entered and threw what turned out to be the game-winning TD pass with 31 seconds remaining. The Wildcats had one final shot, but Andrew Brewer threw an interception which was returned for a Touchdown, silencing any comeback that may have been in the works.
"This week in practice, we're going to work desperately hard on the final quarter of the game. To lose this kind of game, to a conference opponent none-the-less, is heartbreaking to a team and could completely turn the season around - in a bad way. We need to rebound well next week against Purdue," said a disappointed Coach Taylor after the game.
Stephen Simmons continued his inconsistancy, running for only 19 yards on 16 carries. Freshman halfback Erik Humphrey had 21 yards on 7 carries with 1 Touchdown, and is making a significant case for more playing time.
Stefan Demos added 3 more field goals, moving to 92% on the season.
