Humphrey-Time
Stephen Simmons has proved to be a serviceable back for the Northwestern Wildcats. His Junior Season, he gained over 1000 yards on the ground, and went into his Senior season as the #1 back on the depth chart, ahead of Sophomore Erik Humphrey. However, with Simmons' knack for acquiring different injuries, Humphrey may just be forced into a starting role - which he showed he is ready for, against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Humphrey had 108 yards on 24 carries, and also had 5 receptions for 58 yards. While he failed to get a touchdown either on the ground or through the air, he felt he had a good showing.
"I've wanted to show the team what I am capable of doing every week. I've shared the carries with Stephen over the year and produced, and I wanted to show I can produce without a back to spell with," said Humphrey following the 28-24 win for the Wildcats.
The buckeyes jumped out to a 21-7 lead near the half, but 3rd string Halfback Josh Rodriguez came in to give Humphrey a breather and converted a 8 yard run for a Touchdown with 59 ticks left in the 2nd quarter.
The Wildcats scored 14 points in the 3rd quarter to take the lead, and they never relinquished it to the Buckeyes. They did add a John Jacobs field goal in the 4th, but never reached the endzone.
