Close Game Turns Ugly Late
This game was a beaut until late in the 3rd quarter. Tied at 7 at halftime courtesy of a pair of 40+ yard airbows, neither team scored again until less than 4 minutes left in the 3rd. But then Richmond started pulling away. As the final quarter began the Spiders led 21-7. When a field goal made it 24-7, Richmond started going easy on the Runnin' Rebels. But the Spiders would score another 24 points before it was over. The Las Vegas crowd booed a 45 yard pass from Roberts to Harvey as time was running out, but most viewers had retired to the blackjack tables long before then.
Incredibly, UNLV threw 8 interceptions - half of them to UR cornerback Eddie Scott. Scott's 4 interceptions may have set a modern day NCAA record. Three of those INT's came in exactly the same way: Scott sitting on a curl route. Others with INTs were Calhoun, Kidd, and Tall Rider (twice).
The Las Vegas secondary did not fare so well. #1 corner Kenan Smith broke his wrist and will miss the next 12 weeks, and #2 strong safety Todd Hensley broke his finger and will miss 3 weeks. While researching this, we discovered that UNLV has 2 players named Calvin Williams on their roster.
DT Stearn Bumpass, in his debut, made 3 tackles and 1 sack.
