Goin' Bowlin' (hopefully)

November 3, 2007
MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) - Coach Ghettoshark has done it. In his first year as head coach of the Idaho Vandals (6-4 5-1 WAC), he's rebounded from a horrific 1-4 start, won 5 straight games, and now has got the Vandals bowl eligible with a win over Louisiana Tech. And with just two games left for the Vandals, they still have a shot at winning the Western Athletic Conference championship. Granted they need some outside help to win a conference championship, but the Vandals are bowl eligible for the first time since the 1998 season.

In order to get to that magical 6th win, the Vandals had to go through the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (4-5 2-4 WAC). The game was a classic back and fourth matchup, which had the lead change 5 times throughout the course of the game. However, starting late in the 3rd, the Vandals scored 17 straight points which completely changed the complexion of the game.

With a 34-21 lead and under three minutes left to play in the game, the Vandals seemed to have the game all but won. But with under two minutes in the game, LTU QB Joe Danna connected with WR Thomas Augusta on a 66 yard pass to make it a one possession game. Despite missing the extra point, the Bulldogs recovered the ensuing onside kick, and drove down to within the redzone before getting stopped just short on 4th and 10 by LB Jo Artis Ratti.

"Its amazing what these kids have done given what our 1-4 start. Now we have week to rest before preparing for our next game [at #17 Boise State]. Boise's a good team and we will have to give it all we got in order to even have a chance at winning," said Coach Ghettoshark.

The game was also QB Nathan Enderle's first game since he broke his collarbone early in week 1's game at #1 USC. He completed 20 out of 36 passes for 237 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in the 34-27 win over Louisiana Tech.

"Even though statistically [Enderle] didn't have great numbers, I'm sure that's just a result of not playing for so many weeks. Obviously the speed of practice is nowhere near the speed of D1-A ball," said Ghettoshark.

HB Brian Flowers only gained 66 yards on 19 attempts, but his 129 all-purpose yards earned him his second straight player of the game award (third total).

"[Flowers] has what you look for in a runningback. He not only can earn you yards on the ground, but he can catch the ball out of the backfield as well. A major part of our recent success is because of him," said Ghettoshark.

The Vandals have a bye week before traveling to Boise to take on their rivals, the #17 ranked Broncos.
