Vandals give USC scare for a quarter

September 1, 2007
LOS ANGELES (AP) - When Nathan Enderle was on the field in the 1st quarter, he was brilliant, completing 8 out of 11 for 130 yards and a score. He also led the Vandals to a 10-7 lead. However, with less than a minute to go before the end of the 1st quarter, tragedy stuck the Vandals as Enderle got injured. After the game, the team's athletic trainer revealed that he had suffered a broken collarbone and will be sidelined for the next 5 weeks. This is devastating for the Vandals, as neither backups Brian Nooy or Chris Joseph got into any sort of a rhythm, throwing 5 and 4 picks each, respectively.

Sophomore WR Max Komar was one of the few bright spots for an otherwise poor Vandals performance. He had a career day, catching 10 passes for 201 yards and a score (see video below).

The Vandal rushing attack, which going into the season was considered an area of strength, did nearly nothing, only gaining 27 yards on 23 carries. USC, on the other hand, with the same amount of carries gained 180 yards.

At a postgame interview, Coach Ghettoshark said that he "...still has a good amount of faith in his rushing game", and "...this was the defense of the #1 ranked team in the country." He also told reporters that "...the offensive line needs to improve dramatically if [they] are going to accomplish the preseason goal of a bowl bid."

USC QB John David Booty boosted his Heisman stock greatly by torching the Vandal defense on his way to a 16 for 24, 383 yard, 5 TD performance. The Vandals managed to pick him off twice, but the stagnant Vandal offense got no points off of them.

USC's Stafon Johnson rushed for 126 yards on just 18 carries, and got two touchdowns. The Vandals couldn't stop his backup, Stanley Havili, either who destroyed the Vandals with a 67 yard TD run on his only carry of the night.

The Vandals finished the game with no points in the second, third, or fourth quarters in a embarrassing 70-10 loss at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The Vandals play FCS Midwest next week in Moscow, Idaho.
