Cardinal Land First Win of Season

The Stanford Cardinal landed there first win of the season as they defeated the San Jose State Spartans 56-24. 2 records were broken during the game. Evans set a NCAA record for the longest interception return for a TD with a 104 yard return in the 2nd quarter. Kimble set the school rushing record with 319 yards on 21 carries.

San Jose State got on the board first with a field goal on their opening possession. Stanford answered on their first drive as Kimble punched it in from 2 yards out to give the Cardinal a 7-3 lead. On the Spartans next offensive play the scored on a 63 yard TD pass. But Stanford would answer right back, after a nice kick return from Baldwin, Kimble took the pitch and got the corner and scored another TD this one from 57 yards out. The first quarter would end 14-10 Stanford.

Forcier found fullback Marecic off a play action pass from 6 yards out to give the Cardinal a 21-10 lead. The Spartans would drive down the fied but Evans would grab a pick in the endzone and return it for the TD and the NCAA record. San Jose State did score on there next possession on a TD pass with 10 seconds left in the half, bringing the score to 28-17. Stanford ran a play to run out the clock but Kimble broke it for an 80 yard TD. Score at the half 35-17. Kimble had 212 yards in the first half.

Stanford got the ball to start the half and it didn't take long for Kimble to break the Stanford single game rushing record. Forcier's pass to TE Dray would cap off the drive and give the Cardinal a commanding 42-17 lead. After a Spartan punt, Forcier lead Stanford on another TD scoring drive finding fullback Morecic on a 14 yard pass bringing the lead to 49-17. San Jose State took the following kickoff to the house cutting the lead to 49-24 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

The 4th quarter didn't provide much scoring but the Stanford starters didn't play after Forcier found Morecic again for his 3rd TD. Score 56-24. The Stanford backup's held San Jose State's offense for the better half of the 4th quarter scoreless.

Stanford's next game is against the Washington Huskies. Stanford will be looking for the first conference win and looking to build some more momentum heading into rival Notre Dame.
