Terps Survive Frantic Miami Comeback, 28-25

CORAL GABLES, FL - When Maryland's Ronnie Tyler returned a punt 91 yards for a touchdown with 3:43 to play to put the Terps up 28-12, the game appeared over. But Miami followed up what seemed to be a futile touchdown drive by recovering the ensuing onside kick. The next play was a 64 yard touchdown pass to cut the Maryland lead to 3, 28-25. Maryland recovered the onside kick, and Jeremy Ricker capped off the best game of his Maryland career by completing a 12 yard pass to Tyler on 3rd down to seal the victory.

Miami missed some great chances throughout the game. The Hurricanes had the ball inside the Maryland 5 yard line on three different occasions in the first quarter. All that they managed was two field goals and an interception. Maryland carried that momentum and dominated the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

Miami had a chance to tie the game in the 4th quarter by executing a 2-point conversion, but the Terrapin defense stuffed the run play inches short of the goal line. By the time Miami regained some momentum, it was too late.

The win clinches the Terrapin's 4th straight Atlantic Division title. Virginia and Virginia Tech will meet next week in a game that will decide the winner of the Coastal Division. The Terps head to Boston to take on the Boston College Eagles.

NCAA NOTES: Oklahoma, UCLA and West Virginia are the only three remaining unbeatens and are ranked 1,2,3 in the BCS standings. Ohio State sits in a familiar position, as the 2-time defending champions only got into both Championship Games via losses by higher ranked teams during Championship Week.
