Terps Again Fall Short on Last Play

COLLEGE PARK, MD - You'd have to look fairly hard to find a team more demoralized than these Maryland Terrapins. After storming back in the 3rd quarter to erase a 22-7 deficit and take a 25-22 lead, Maryland let NC State tie the game and then take the lead on a 69 yard TD pass with 2:06 to play in the 4th. Led by QB Jeremy Ricker and HB Derrick Leslie, Maryland negotiated their way down to the NC State 25 yard line. But a running play designed to gain 5-7 yards and get out of bounds did neither and Maryland had 6 seconds and 2 chances. The first was barley tipped away by a Wolfpack defender and the second was picked off to end the game. For the 2nd week in a row, Maryland lost the game on the very last play from scrimmage. Another spectacular individual effort was wasted, as Leslie ran for 213 yards and 3 scores.

The loss drops Maryland to #19 in the Coaches Poll just 2 weeks after being crowned #1. Next week Maryland stays home to face Wake Forest, a team that beat the Terps 28-24 last season.

NCAA NOTES: What an early season schedule! We've had #3 MD over #1 USC, #3 Ohio St over #7 USC, now we get a 1-2 match-up in Week 4! #1 Oklahoma will travel to (you guessed it) #2 Ohio State.
