West Virginia Clings to Victory, 35-33

MORGANTOWN, WV - Ronnie Tyler's third punt return for a touchdown came with no time remaining on the clock. After a roughing the passer penalty put the Terps on the WVU 1 for the 2-point conversion, the Terps tried to pound it in. But as it had all day, the Mountaineer defense didn't give an inch, and Maryland HB Derrick Leslie was stopped just shy of the goal line.

The loss taints one of the greatest performances by a Terrapin in the program's history. Ronnie Tyler returned three punts for touchdowns of 72, 65 and 74 yards. He also caught 4 passes for 54 yards. But it was Maryland's inability to run and stop the run that hurt the most. West Virginia out rushed Maryland by 246 yards (304-58). Three interceptions by Jeremy Ricker certainly didn't help the cause.

Maryland loses it's number 1 ranking just as quickly as they earned it, but must move on quickly as their ACC opener comes next week vs. NC State.

NCAA NOTES: Two-time Champion #3 Ohio State trounced #7 USC 35-10 to drop the Trojans to 0-2. Oklahoma becomes the third #1 ranked team in as many weeks with Ohio State very close behind.
