Hokies fall to rival Hurricanes

In a season where seemingly nothing could go wrong for the Virginia Tech Hokies, wrong they went, losing to the number 18 Miami Hurricanes 37-17.

For a team that prides itself on efficient football, the Hokies were hardly efficient, with quarterback Tyrod Taylor getting sacked ten times, throwing three interceptions in the process. The Hokies did, however, thoroughly manhandle the Hurricanes yardage wise, outgaining them by nearly 90 yards on offense, 353-267.

But that wasn't enough for Tech today.

"When you turn the ball over five times and get sacked ten, it's impossible to win," Tech head coach Justin Jett said. "Our offense did not play well, although we put up some pretty numbers in the first down and total yardage columns."

Virginia Tech earned 19 first downs in the loss, but even that wasn't enough to defeat the Hurricanes. Three touchdowns within four and a half minutes in the second quarter spelled disaster for the Hokies, as Miami led Virginia Tech 28-7 at half.

"If you take away those last few minutes, our defense played phenomenally," Jett said. "You can't even blame the defense really, as the incompetence on my part and on the offense today led to those points."

As for the national championship, the number four ranked Hokies are all but out of it now. Taylor took most of the blame, citing his freshman mistakes for the missed oppurtunity.

"If I didn't throw those interceptions we'd still probably be in it," Taylor said. "I feel really bad for all the seniors on the team."
