Pirates force Eers to walk the plank
Backup QB Brett Clay threw for 163 yards and three touchdowns and East Carolina forced 5 turnovers in a season opening win over West Virginia in Morgantown on Saturday. It was the second straight year the Pirates upset WVU as heavy underdogs.
West Virginia, beginning a new chapter without departed QB Pat White put on an outstanding offensive display, but ultimately it was White's successor who struggled the most. Jarrett Brown threw four costly interceptions on the afternoon. Interceptions that put a stop to long drives and erased any chance WVU had of overcoming a 24-7 halftime defecate.
The Mountaineers much hyped young wide receivers proved worthy of the accolades as freshmen Stedman Bailey and Logan Heastie combined for 10 catches and two touchdowns on the day. The WVU ground attack was added by back-up Mark Rodgers 72 yards, which included a 61 yard touchdown.
Defensively West Virginia was led by NT Chris Neild's 7 stops. Neild also added two sacks including a first quarter sack of ECU starter Rob Kass that knocked Kass out of the game with an appareant shoulder injury.
Next up for WVU is #7 Auburn on the road next Saturday evening. Kickoff is set for 6:00 pm with coverage on ESPN2.
