Heartbreak in Tampa; FG as time expires beats Eers
Matt Bonani kicked a 43 FG as time expired Thursday night to lead USF over WVU 31-29. West Virginia had just taken the lead 29-28 on QB Jarrett Brown's 4 yard scamper with just 35 seconds left in regulation. But QB Matt Grothie completed a series of passes to pull the Bulls within Bonani's range.
The loss was the first in conference play for WVU. This one coming in the last game of a three game road swing. The Bulls have now beaten WVU 3 out of the last four years, with WVU winning last year in Morgantown.
The Mountaineers were led by Brown who threw for 206 yards and 2 scores. He also added two scores on the ground, the last of which WVU hoped would seal the win, but it was not to be.
Defensively West Virginia was led by senior LB Ovid Golbourne's 2 sacks of Grothie. Senior Reed Williams also added 7 stops. WVU now will return home next Saturday to take on Louisville.
