Around the Nation

Weekly Report Posted: November 07, 2013 23:30

Florida State faces Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship this weekend. If they can get past the Hokies, a National Title game with the Oklahoma Sooners awaits them. The Sooners, the Big 12 Champions, beat #2 Oklahoma State 37-19 to earn the #2 spot in the rankings.

In the SEC Championship, Georgia and Alabama battle in a rematch from last year's game. However, there is no National Championship reward for the winner this time.

Arizona State and Stanford meet in the Pac 12 Championship this year. Arizona State upset USC a few weeks back to earn a spot in the championship game.

Finally, Michigan and Ohio State meet for the second time in three weeks for the Big 10 title. Ohio State beat Michigan two weeks ago in their annual rivalry game.

Week 16 Practice Report

Weekly Report Posted: November 12, 2013 21:06

The Seminoles spent this week practicing for their ACC Championship matchup with #9 Virginia Tech. The atmosphere around the practice fields was intense and energetic and the players and coaches were in tune with each other in preparation for the game.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Noles spent a lot of time practicing situational football, including game-winning drives and long field goals. Jameis Winston was particularly sharp throughout the week and seemed to be more serious than usual during practice. The ACC Championship game will be his last chance to validate his Heisman trophy candidacy. Although Winston received the majority of the first-team reps, Jacob Coker and Sean Maguire also took reps with the first team. It seems like the coaching staff is preparing for any situation against this Virginia Tech defense.

The only major news on the offensive side of the ball was of Jeremy Kerr's promotion to backup tight end behind Nick O'Leary. Giorgio Newberry, the previous backup, has been hampered by a groin injury throughout the week. Newberry, who played defensive end last season, has been disappointing throughout the year at his new role. Meanwhile, Kerr has impressed in second-team duty and it seems like this decision has been a long time coming.

The defense practiced a lot of their base 3-4 defense as well as nickel and dime packages. Keelin Smith was taking second-team reps behind Lamarucus Joyner at nickel back and shadowed him throughout the week. Meanwhile, Jalen Ramsey was taking second-team reps behind Tyler Hunter at strong safety. It seems as if he will be moved exclusively to safety if Hunter departs for the NFL.

Florida State claims the ACC Title in a blowout

Florida State scored on its first possession, a 4 yard run by Devonta Freeman, and never looked back en route to a 51-3 victory over #9 Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship game. Freshman quarterback sensation and the projected Heisman trophy winner Jameis Winston threw for 371 yards and 5 touchdowns in his best game of the season and the Seminoles rolled to their second straight ACC Championship.

Winston connected with senior receiver Kenny Shaw for 225 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air and tight end Nick O'Leary also caught 5 passes for 124 yards and a pair of scores. The two combined for 13 catches, 349 yards, and 5 touchdowns. Kelvin Benjamin caught one pass for 4 yards and Christian Green caught another for 18, but Shaw and O'Leary played lights out for their freshman quarterback en route to the win.

Devonta Freeman ran for 79 yards and another score on the day but, more importantly, he passed 1,000 yards rushing on the season, becoming the Seminole's first 1,000 yard rusher since Warrick Dunn. Karlos Williams and James Wilder Jr accounted for 104 rushing yards between them as the Seminoles run game could not be stopped.

The Florida State defense was dominant, knocking Virginia Tech quarterback out of the game early with a sprained shoulder and harassing backup quarterback Mark Laul throughout the night. Terrance Brooks accounted for 7 solo tackles and PJ Williams recorded 4 tackles and 2 interceptions in the game. Christian Jones proved that he has become a dominant edge rusher, with 3 sacks against the stout Virginia Tech offensive line.

With the win, Florida State is now looking forward to their National Championship matchup with #2 Oklahoma, the undefeated Big 12 Champions.
