Holy shit! What kind of foresight did the gods of college football have to offer up a rematch of last season's national championship in week one? Seems a bit fishy, no? The #2 ranked Crows of Henry Morton travel to the Swamp to take on the #1 Gators of Florida. The first drive of the game saw the Gators drive toward midfield, only to have the heat from an Edgarian Mukezamfura rush induce an interception. The Crows used a nice mix of runs from Delmar Coffee and new starting QB, fifth year senior Clarence Oveur, to get on the board first with a Jerome Sherman field goal. After a Mukezamfura interception, yes, that's right, HMU drove the 18 yards with three Coffee rushes and a 10-0 lead. UF came back, avoided disaster a couple times and got on the board with a field goal. After one, the Crows led 10-3. Early in the second, Sherman added another field goal. The teams traded punts before a third and 11 pass from Florida resulted in a 52-yard bomb and first and goal from the four. The Gators hit pay dirt and dropped the lead to 13-10. With time running out in the half, Oveur went to the air, connecting five times with his tight ends, four of them to senior Tomas Rosen, including an 11-yard score right before the break. At the half, HMU is up 20-10.

Facing third and 2 from their own 19, the Crows sent a dagger to the heart of the Gator fans, an 81-yard catch and run from Oveur to senior speedster Lance Day. Florida missed a field goal but forced a punt after Coffee was injured (enough to miss the rest of the game). On third and 14, the Gators burned senior corner Joe Allen for a 40-yard bomb to the Crow 1. Two plays later, Florida was in the end zone, squashing the lead back to 10 at 27-17. That's how it stood going into the fourth. The Crows then embarked on a 15-play 54-yard drive, taking up 4:22 of game time, before Sherman booted a 31-yard field goal to up it to 30-17, HMU. It took only one play to make this a one-score game. Allen was burned once again, yielding a 63-yard touchdown and trimming the Crow advantage to 30-24 with 5:23 to play. Wanting to spare no last effort, Coach Fielding Blue calls for a long one on first down at the Crow 20. Oveur obliges, hooking up with Day for a 42-yard gain into Gator territory. The offense hunkers down, running the ball consistently, using the backups to Coffee, Marvelious Young and Tommy Guidry. Young gets the final carry, a 1-yard TD and a 37-24 lead with just 2:41 to go. Florida reaches the red zone quickly...but FS Booker Greene makes the pick. HMU runs three times and punts before Greene makes another interception to ice the game. Big, big win.

Things didn't start well for the #1 Crows in their home opener against the team they booted from the Big Ten lo these many years ago. The Illini tossed a 77-yard TD pass to get us going. But that didn't last long. HB Delmar Coffee followed with a couple of 1-yard TD runs and QB Clarence Oveur hit WR Donfredale Harper with a 45-yard TD pass. At the end of one, HMU led 21-7. Ten more Crow points in the third and three TD passes from Oveur to WR Lance Day in the fourth made it a 52-7 shellacking of Illinois. Next up for the Crows is a home date with Kent State.

The Golden Flashes weren't much of a challenge for the top-ranked Crows. Kent fumbled its first possession, leading to a 20-yard TD pass to Lance Day from QB Clarence Oveur. After a Kent punt, Oveur to TE Tomas Rosen for 14 yards and a score. Kent fumbles, 30-yard FG from Jerome Sherman. The Flashes finally busts free, scoring on an odd 84-yard TD pass in which three Kent players batted it around as the lone Crow defender dove for the pick. KSU missed the PAT though. At the end of one, HMU led 17-6. Joe Allen picked off Kent leading to a Delmar Coffee TD run. A Kent punt set up an Oveur to Uti Possidetis TD pass. Sherman tacked on another field goal and the Crows were up 34-6 at the break. HMU let off the gas in the second half as the Flashes outscored our heroes 14-7 but too little too late. The 3-0 Crows travel to College Station to take on the Aggies of Texas A&M next week.

I'll be honest. It was ugly. TAMU missed a 25-yard field goal on its first possession and that was a highlight. The Crows knocked through a 38-yarder by Jerome Sherman, made a pick via LB Samson Stewart and scored on a 1-yard Delmar Coffee plunge. After a Joe Allen INT, QB Clarence Oveur hit TE Randolph Yapp for a 57-yard TD and a 17-0 Crow lead. A shanked TAMU punt and a 40-yard Lance Day TD catch. The Aggies did manage a FG before the break but was down 24-3 at half. Coffee with a 3-yard TD run, Yapp with a 27-yard TD catch. TAMU added a long field goal (51 yards) near the end of the third, but it's like 38-6 at that point. Uti Possidetis with a 33-yard TD catch, later a 40-yard TD catch from Donfredale Harper. The subs got good time in this 52-6 shellacking. The Big Ten season starts next with the Crows still #1 and 4-0.

Michigan failed to give the top-ranked Crows a game. Minnesota was almost worse. After the first quarter, Henry Morton led 16-0 and hadn't scored offensively: CB Joe Allen returned an interception, DT William Washington made a safety sack, and DT J.J. Massey recovered a fumble in the end zone. The Golden Gophers scraped out a couple field goals later, but by that time, the Crow offense awoke and piled up some decent numbers en route to the win. Next is a trip to Bloomington.

Let's be nice to the Hoosiers. We'll keep it brief. The Crows started things off with an 87-yard TD pass from QB Clarence Oveur to WR Lance Day. A couple of Delmar Coffee TD runs and two more Oveur TD passes (one of those to Day as well) and HMU led IU 35-7 at the break. In the third quarter, Day returned the opening kickoff for a TD while DT J.J. Massey took a fumble to the house and CB Jules Barbish returned one of his 3 picks on the day for a score. The bench cleared as many little-known Crows saw action en route to a 90-14 rout in Bloomington. Henry Morton is now 7-0 (3-0 in the Big Ten) and welcoming the Badgers of Wisconsin next week.

Apparently pasting the Hoosiers 90-14 is enough to get you down to #2 in the nation. Huh? The 7-0 Crows (3-0 Big Ten) welcome the #18 Badgers of Wisconsin (4-2, 2-2). Wisky looks pretty good to start things off, but stalls late and misses a 45-yard field goal. Wisconsin cashes in on the next drive, taking a 7-0 lead on a 34-yard TD run. HMU follows with a Jerome Sherman field goal before the end of the first. The same Badger ball carrier blasts away for a 63-yard score early in the second, but the PAT is missed. Badgers up 13-3. Another Sherman field goal and a very nice Delmar Coffee 45-yard TD run tie it up at the half. Early in the third, LB Sam Van intercepts an errant Wisconsin missive and takes it 74 yards for a 20-13 Crow advantage. The backup Badger halfback does the damage on the next drive, scoring on a 58-yard scamper to tie it up at 20 halfway through the third quarter. Little known freshman corner Junior Stone has been returning kickoffs all year in an effort to fulfill a playing time promise. Stone took the ensuing kickoff 91 yards to pay dirt and what turned out to be the final score of the game in a hard fought 27-20 Crow win. The 8-0 Henry Mortonians take a week off before traveling to West Lafayette to take on a disappointing Purdue squad.

Back to #1 in the nation, the 8-0 (4-0 Big Ten) Crows travel to West Lafayette to take on the 4-3 (1-3) Boilermakers of Purdue. A halfback screen on the first possession went for a 56-yard TD and caused lots of inane cheers of "Boiler Up!" QB Clarence Oveur hooked up with TE Randolph Yapp to tie it up with an 11-yard TD. Oveur then directed a later drive with two fourth down conversions, including a 30-yard TD to WR Donfredale Harper on 4th and 6. Purdue ran a nice WR sweep to tie it at 14 before the end of the first. Punter Jean-Luc Mbuta knocked through a 37-yard field goal in the second to give the Crows the lead, but Purdue returned a fumble 84 yards (nice job, Marvelious Young, in for a momentarily injured Delmar Coffee) in the final minute of the half for a 21-17 locker room advantage. WR Lance Day returned the third quarter kickoff 95 yards for a score and a lead HMU would not relinquish. The Crow D shut out the Boilers and tacked on a couple more scores in a 34-21 win. Now 9-0 (5-0), HMU welcomes an underperforming (4-4, 2-3) Penn State squad to the Crows Nest next week.

The Nittany Lions were #7 before the season began, but here they were 4-4 (2-3 Big Ten). PSU started strong on this sunny cold day with a field goal. HMU missed the tying attempt and only got another shot early in the second. This time kicker Jerome Sherman was true. A 65-yard bomb to WR Lance Day gave the Crows the lead, but a nice ball control drive by the Lions tied it up again with a minute and a half before the break. HB Delmar Coffee ripped off a 73-yard TD, however, to HMU back on top, 17-10. PSU added a field goal to drop it to a 4-point Crow lead. In the second half, Coffee struck again with a 2-yard TD in the third and a 6-yarder in the fourth to put it away. HMU is now a fantastic 10-0 (6-0 Big Ten) and ready for a date with #3 Ohio State (10-0, 6-0) at the Horseshoe next week.

The Buckeyes have surprised many around college football. OSU started the season ranked #24 but have risen to #3 with a 10-0 start. This one will determine the Big Ten leader before the final weekend in conference play. Big time game. It's sunny and 28 degrees here in Columbus and the Shoe is rocking. The Bucks took the ball first and established the running attack. After a holding call, however, the passing opened up and OSU took the lead on a 60-yard slant and go from the tight end, who burned FS Booker Greene on third and 20. After a few punts, Greene made up for his mistake, intercepting the Buckeye signal-caller who looked suspiciously like Terelle Pryor. Starting at the Buck 22, HMU could only go backward (on a sack) and settled for a 46-yard field goal from P Jean-Luc Mbuta, the long distance specialist. Two plays later, OSU turned it over again, this time on an interception from MLB Sam Van. Starting at the 29 this time, the Crows did move forward, failing to convert a third and 4. Another field goal was pushed through, this time from 37 by K Jerome Sherman and HMU trailed 7-6 after one quarter. Early in the second, the Buckeyes used a couple of solid completions to set up a screen pass for a 14-6 advantage. HMU, still without a first down, punted again and OSU drove deep into Crow territory, but missed a 35-yard FG. HMU responded by finally getting the offense clicking, thanks to a third and 12 completion to TE Tomas Rosen for 37 yards into Buckeye territory. A couple of key conversions kept things alive but on third and goal, QB Clarence Oveur's pass was incomplete. Sherman knocked through a chip shot to make it 14-9. A quick three and out for OSU included two Crow sacks and then a shanked punt. Starting at the OSU 32 with about 30 seconds before half, HMU suffered a double whammy play. HB Delmar Coffee caught a screen pass for 7 yards on third and 10, which would have given the Crows a 30-yard field goal try. However the flag for holding comes out and Coffee is knocked out for the game with an injury. Mbuta's 48-yard attempt sails wide right and the home Bucks lead 14-9 at the break.

In the second half, HMU nearly coughed up the opening kickoff, but WR Lance Day's fumble was covered by CB Tops Bonner. Oveur led the team into Bucks territory, but once again failed on a key third down with an incompletion. Mbuta nailed a 52-yard bomb though to narrow the gap to 14-12 halfway through the third quarter. The OSU quarterback was sacked by DE Edgarian Mukezamfura, who felt him up to force a fumble which Van fell upon. Starting at the Buck 20, Oveur finally got the Crows into the end zone on a TD pass to Day, giving HMU a 19-14 lead. After a couple of punts, OSU tossed yet another interception deep in its own end, as LB Samson Stewart muscled his way in front of the receiver. The fifth Crow drive to start inside the OSU 32 results in another TD as Oveur, hot now, hits WR Uti Possidetis for the score on the final play of the third quarter. HMU leads 26-14 at the Shoe and OSU appears to be folding. The Bucks turn it over on downs at midfield on a Mukezamfura sack and CB Jules Barbish ends the next OSU drive with an interception. The final Buck possession is quick and painless with another TOD. Huge, huge win for the Crows, who remain #1 in the nation and are 11-0 (7-0 Big Ten) going into a final matchup with rival (but down) Northwestern at home.

I'd love to say that Northwestern was an easy win, but that's not the truth. Back in 2010-ish, HMU was ranked #1 going into a game in Evanston. The Wildcats rose tall that day and blasted the Crows into scurrying back to the title game, only to lose to Notre Dame. Northwestern wasn't an easy win today, they were an extremely easy win. HMU led 14-0 after the first on a 20-yard TD pass from QB Clarence Oveur to WR Lance Day and a pick six by CB Jules Barbish. At halftime, the Crows led 33-0 on a safety sack by DT William Washington, a Delmar Coffee TD run, a TD catch by Randolph Yapp and a field goal from Jerome Sherman. After three, it was 40-0 as backup QB Elmer Pitcock tossed a 63-yard TD to WR Uti Possidetis. In the fourth, NW finally scored but the Crows tacked on two more late TDs. Yeah, that easy. 54-7, Crows and a trip to the championship game. Let's hope it ends better than last year's 12-0 season marred by a title game loss.
