Another Top 10 Finish for Prairie Dogs

Season Report Posted: December 25, 2020 03:49

NSU opened the season ranked #2, but an upstart South Alabama team and a defending national champion sank a promising season.

NSU opened with wins over Louisville and Missouri, both bowl teams last season but faltered to just five wins between them. But a Week 3 matchup with South Alabama dimmed NSU's chance at a national title. The Jags moved the ball steadily and never relinquished early control en route to a 38-21 win.

Iowa slammed the door shut on any chance for a rise back to the top of the polls with a 28-24 upset. Despite the loss, NSU won the West Division and punched its ticket to Indianapolis to meet the defending national champions and top-ranked Penn State. Heisman winner Weatherford proved why the senior was the best player in the NCAA, rushing for 187 yards in the Big 10 title game and throwing for two more scores as Penn State defeated NSU 38-31 and later defeat Notre Dame for the second straight season to repeat as national champs.

NSU would blow out Auburn in the Capital One Bowl and end the season 11-3 and ranked #10 in both polls.
