I Don't Believe What I Just Saw

NC State lost to UNC! This means that Wake now sits atop the ACC Atlantic division and controls its own fate. A win at Maryland will clinch a spot in the ACC title game and set up a rematch against Virginia Tech. But a loss will automatically put NC State in as they have the head-to-head tie breaker.

"Wow. What a game" was all that Coach DeLoye had to say about his Wake Forest defeat of the formerly unbeaten, #7 ranked Virginia Tech team. Coming into the game, Virgina Tech had the nation's #2 defense and it really showed. Wake was only able to muster 170 yards of total offense and only 10 first downs. However, the key to the game turned out to be Wake's amazing defense on the day. Holding VT to only 70 yards of offense was a new record for the Demon Deacons. Some may argue that it was VT's penalties that lost them the game. They racked up 3 penalties for 35 yards both season highs for an oppenent this year. Mauk and Andrews both did their job on getting to the red zone and just letting Swank kick it through. This was all it took. Wake actually came quite close to a shutout as VT's only points came on a 53 yard FG that hit the upright but still managed to go in. "I'm very dissappointed we didn't get a greatest game score."

Next week is at Maryland(5-6). A win will put the Demon Deacons in the conference championship to play for a chance to goto the Orange Bowl. This would be the first January bowl game that Wake has been to since 1949.

**Note- A Maryland victory would mean that 10 out of the 12 ACC teams would be bowl eligible.
