IT WAS A DONE DEAL WHEN
The whistle blew at the end. That's how close it was. Yale busted out with two long TD passes in the 4th to go take the lead. We then drove the field. We spiked the ball at the 2 yard line with 5 seconds left. We threw a quick pass to Curtis Stanley, which fell incomplete. And then on the final play, we brought in Tony Williams at QB to run an option play. They threw him for a loss before he ever had a chance to make the pitch, and they held on to the lead.
GAME BALLS
QB Collier Winters got his first ever start in place of Tony Williams (whose interceptions finally prompted me to give him the hook last week). Winters was amazing early on, taking what the defense gave him as he threw 2 TD passes in the 2nd quarter. He finished with 3 TDs and only 1 INT. ... Our #3 wide receiver, freshman Karl Bush, caught 4 balls for 109 yards and 2 TDs. One of the TDs came on a beautiful play-action fake where he was left all alone at the goalline. ... My #2 DT Darius Darlington got a sack and forced a fumble, making his mark as we used more 4-man lines with our nickel defense as Yale kept calling spread out offensive formations (giving him more chances than he usually gets when we're in our 3-4 and Darlington isn't our #1 nose tackle). ... ILB Leon Neal made 3 tackles for a loss, notched a sack, and nabbed an interception.
KEY STATISTICS
Yale's wide-open passing offense finally burned us in the end, scoring on two TDs that went for 70 yards and 77 yards in the 4th quarter. ... Yale's QB, Evan Sharpley, who transferred from Notre Dame, had a QB rating of 240.7, as he was very efficient in picking up the win in the rivalry. ... With our 18 first downs, 182 rushing yards, and 20 minutes of possession, we did our best to keep the ball away from Yale's potent passing attack.
NOTES
TE Curtis Stanley moved into a tie for most TD catches in a season with his 6th TD grab in the 2nd quarter. The freshman TE tied the mark set by Alec Math in 2008. ... QB Collier Winter's 17 completions were more than Tony Williams ever got in any game. The 17 completions rank 5th on our list of single-game performances. His 3 TD passes were also morethan Williams ever managed in a single game. ... The loss knocked us out of 1st place atop the conference. ... Backup junior DT Carl Ehrlich broke his elbow and will miss the rest of the season.
