Spartans Hang Close for One Half

It was the beginning of the Jason Williams era Saturday when the San Jose State Spartans hosted the San Diego State Aztecs. In front of a half-full stadium, and a rain drenched field the Spartans hung in their for one half before falling to the Aztecs by a score of 55-21.

"I saw a lot of positives from this football game despite the score. What we really need to do is focus on completing a higher percentage of our passes, and throwing fewer interceptions." Coach Williams said, "if we were able to do that this game, we would be right there in the ballgame. It was very close as the score indicated early in the third before we lost our composure. I don't know if the football got wet, they couldn't see or what. I just know those turnovers need to be fixed and we have got to complete more passes."

Williams, despite the loss, was still able to throw out a joke to the media, "I guess this is why I ran the football so often in Lincoln huh?"

Starting quarterback Bryan Holland was pulled from the game after he went just 13 for 28 for 137 yards and four interceptions. His backup, Graham Everson, didn't fair much better completing just six of his 21 passes and throwing two interceptions.

"I told Holland on the sideline that he is still the starting quarterback of this football team, I just needed to try something different. We were still in the ballgame only down a few possessions so I thought maybe a change of quarterback could give our offense the boost it needed. Obviously that didn't work. It's pretty sad that your best offensive play of the football game is a kick return. We have a lot of work to do."

A lone bright spot for the Spartans would be the player of Wide Receiver Jeremy Harrell. The sophomore reciever caught five passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. He also returned a kick 101 yards for a touchdown to open the 2nd half. His kick return set an NCAA record.

For the Aztecs, Quarterback Joey Perkins had an amazing game throwing for 263 yards and four touchdowns. "I have to give the Spartans a lot of credit. They showed a lot of heart out their today. They may not be the most talented bunch of football players, but they play as a team and that is going to take them a long way," Perkins said, "In a few years I would watch out for this team, with their new coach they could be dangerous."

The Spartans will look for their first victory of the season next week when they travel to take on the Duke Blue Devils. Duke defeated Connecticut today 35-3 and moved their record to 1-0 on the season.
