Turnovers Kill San Jose State Again

Turnovers were a big factor yet again in the game Saturday when the Spartans turned it over six times in a 44-17 loss to the host Duke Blue Devils.

"I really don't understand what's going on out their," Coach Jason Williams said after the contest, "I preach daily about playing smart football and limiting mistakes and what happens? We turn the football over 6 times. That is 13 turnovers in just two football games, totally inexcusable. We were making dumb throws, pitches, trying to get an extra yard and it all led to turnovers. I wish I had the figure of how many Duke touchdowns came off of those turnovers."

In fact Duke scored four touchdowns off of the six San Jose State turnovers Saturday.

Coach Williams continued his switching of the quarterbacks this time playing Holland for one half and Everson for the other. Neither impressed the coach, or fans alike, as Holland went 10/28 for 129 yards but had three interceptions, whereas Everson went 7/16 for 110 and only one interception. Coach Williams said he plans to start Everson next week and see how he does from the start, but expect to see Holland in if he struggles.

Coach Williams also said he plans on making major offensive changes to his playcalling saying, "I need to get more running plays in their. I know we are more built to pass the football at the current state, but I need a solid running game in hopes of getting our struggling passing game off of the ground. I don't plan on going back to the option anytime soon, but I likely will implement maybe five or six more run plays for next week. I also need to get Trey (Dorsey) more reps. From what he has shown me he can really move, playing him with Harris might cause some mismatches in the defense that we can exploit."

Like last week, San Jose State showed a lot of promise on the field. If they can cut down on turnovers and complete a higher percentage of their passes they would be a tough team to play.

The Spartans will be going for their first win of the season next week as they visit the Stanford Cardinal.
