Monroe Wins Motor City Bowl 17-14

December 26, 2009

Season Report Posted: August 12, 2008 16:13

The War Hawks of UL-Monroe were ready to finish off a good 2009 season in the Motor City Bowl in Detroit, Michigan against the Kent State Golden Flashes. The War Hawks were the underdogs and were hoping for a win.

The game started out in favor of Kent State and pretty much stayed that way throughout the game. Kent State connected on a touchdown pass earlier in the 1st quarter and went into the 2nd quarter. Monroe quickly followed with a pass from Trey Revell to Mitch Doyle to keep the game tied at 7-7. Almost before halftime, the War Hawks drove down into the redzone and kicked a field goal to go up 10-7 at the half.

The second half was quiet until the last few drives when Kent State threw a bomb that was caught for a touchdown to go up 14-10 with 2 minutes left for Monroe to do something with. The game looked to have ended when Trey Revell threw an interception almost immediatly, but the War Hawks were not done yet. The Monroe defense drove the Golden Flashes back and forced them to punt on timeouts with 45 seconds left. Trey Revell reared back and chucked one towards the heavens for Aaron Stringfellow to make a jump at. Stringfellow came down with the ball and quickly spun off a tackler and juked another defender and was left with no one in front of him. As time ran down to 10 seconds, Stringfellow crossed the goal line to give the War Hawks a 17-14 lead. The Golden Flashes got one more snap and threw a completion but were tackled at the 20 yard line as time expired, giving the War Hawks the Motor City Bowl Title. This capped off a terific 8-5 season for the War Hawks. Trey Revell finished with 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Frank Goodin set a school record with 79 receptions in a season. Goodin is now heading into his senior year.
