Season Wrap-Up

January 8, 2025

Season Report Posted: February 24, 2009 19:48

The ULM Warhawks completed a very successful 2024 season. After a perfect 6-0 start, ULM went into the second half without star RB Kevin Williams. Their next game was @ Ole Miss which ULM handled very well winning 27-7. The next 3 games were all very, very close calls and almost cost the Warhawks their season. A home game at Alabam proved to be the easiest of the next 3 as ULM put 'Bama away late 28-21. The #3 Warhawks were then set to square off against #11 Florida in Louisiana and it all came down to the final minutes when Nate Hill scrambled out right and threw a 14 yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Barnett to win the game for the Warhawks. The following game probably should not have gone ULM's way. The Warhawks were playing poorly against Georgia but managed to take a late 13-6 lead. Georgia worked their way down field and eventually connected on a game-tying TD pass. Everybody was thinking overtime... even the kicker. Talib Lewis, a near perfect place kicker missed his only XP of the year and it cost Georgia the game and gave the Warhawks a 13-12 win. The Warhawks then played Tennessee at home and dominated 24-7 followed by a home route of Idaho. At that point the Warhawks had been invited to the SEC Championship game against #24 LSU. ULM played well early but slowly started to let the Tigers inch away and finally tied the game in the final seconds to go into OT. LSU started with the ball in OT and quickly connected on a TD pass to go up 21-14. ULM answered quickly with a short touchdown pass to Kevin Williams, who had just returned from a serious shoulder injury. ULM had the ball in OT #2 and once again answered quickly with an 8 yard touchdown run from Kevin Williams to go up 28-21. The Warhawks thought they had the game won but were wrong when LSU quickly tied up the game once again. Now heading into a 3rd overtime, LSU started with the ball and quickly worked themselves into a 3rd and 5 situation. Joseph Henry hooked up with Terrance Butler who was forced out just short of the first down, forcing LSU to kick a field goal to go up 31-28. Who else but Kevin Williams would answer for ULM. Williams took the ball on the first play of the drive all the way to the endzone to lock up the Warhawks 6th consecutive SEC title and 9th title in the last 10 years. The Warhawks were sitting strong at #2 going into Bowl Week. SNUBBED! was the headline of the ULM Student Newspaper. That's right. The BCS Pollers decided to pull Penn State, the best team in a decent Big 10 Conference up to #2 and drop ULM down to 3rd, placing the Warhawks in the Sugar Bowl against #6 FIU. People were furious and even a couple riots broke out in East Monroe. The Warhawks had something to prove heading into the Sugar Bowl and they sure proved it. The Warhawks dominated FIU 21-7 while Penn State lost in the Title game 27-17. Bloggers, Reporters, and ESPN personalities across the nation questioned the choice for the BCS Title Game, but there's nothing to be done now. The Warhawks will look to avenge their name next season in 2025 with a full set of Junior players returning. Joe McPhee will most likely take over for graduating QB Nick Hill. Other notable seniors that are leaving are SS Lucas Fontenot, DT Kyle Garrett, and SS Donte Hall, a former walk-on who made a name for himself with ULM. The Warhawks sit depressed now but should look to play with a vengeance in 2025

Mid-Season Report

October 13, 2024

Season Report Posted: February 22, 2009 22:03

After a fantastic title year, the ULM Warhawks are looking to do it again. Starting at #3, ULM is off to a perfect 6-0 start. The Warhawks opened with an easy win against FCS Midwest followed by a 42-25 blowout of Kentucky. The Warhawks then went into Tennessee and defeated the Mid Tennessee State Blue Raiders 31-17. With 3 games left in the first half, the Warhawks played SEC rival South Carolina and showed they are superior with a 35-28 win. The Warhawks scheduled almost every one of their targeted high school recruits for the following weeks game against FCS West where the Warhawks dominated but came out with very bad news. Runningback Kevin Williams suffered a torn shoulder and is expected to miss 5-6 weeks. This is a big blow to the Warhawks as they have already lost Kick returner Grant Dawson for the year and Larry Westerman for 3 more weeks to broken ribs. The battered and torn Warhawks entered their biggest game so far against the #20 Auburn Tigers of the SEC West. The Warhawks struggled but managed to come out on top 17-7 heading into the second half of the year. Hopefully the Warhawks can overcome this adversity and stay alive in the title hunt.
