Season Wrap-Up

January 8, 2027

Season Report Posted: April 13, 2009 15:01

UL-Monroe looked as if they were going to be able to repeat as National Champions. After a win @ Marshall, Monroe went into Conference Rival LSU's house. The Warhawks dominated the Tigers and moved on with an undefeated record. The following week was the Warhawks biggest challenge. The #1 Warhawks were to go up against the #4 Florida Gators, a yearly SEC East Winner deciding game. Well the game turned out to be a joke as ULM destroyed Florida 41-14 and solidified themselves as a National Title contender. The Warhawks then went up to Kentucky to face a Wildcat team that had seen better years. ULM stomped them 31-14 and moved on to a tricky Tennessee team. The Volunteers have always been able to give ULM a tough time, but not this year as Monroe pitched a shutout to the Vol's, winning 17-0. At this point the Warhawks were 10-0 and looking to the postseason. With their 2 remaining games against teams with losing records, they had reason to look past those games. The Warhawks hadn't lost in 66 games, dating back to the frustrating North Texas Loss in Week 1 of the 2022 season. After a blowout in Baylor, the 'Hawks were not even worried about their matchup with 3-8 Memphis in Week 14. Well unfortunately for Charlie Weatherbie and his Monroe team, Memphis outplayed them and knocked them off by winning 31-21, removing the Warhawks from title contention. The #11 Warhawks then faced the #20 Ole Miss Rebels for the SEC title and won 24-14. ULM had locked up a game in the Sugar Bowl with #5 Fresno State. The Warhawks played about at the same level as the Bulldogs and then kicked the game winner to finish off a 13-1 season for the Warhawks. QB's Lawrence Hammond and Tiger Kent will graduate, so the reigns of the ULM offense will be left to a new man.

Mid-Season Report

ULM is once again atop the Polls and is looking for back-to-back titles. The Warhawks started with a rivalry game against UL-Lafeyette. Monroe's new Freshman (RS) RB Mike Olson has looked good thus far and has been included in some experts Heisman polls. After defeating ULL 35-21, ULM opened their SEC season against the Ole Miss Rebels. Once again Mike Olson showed his stuff, by hammering the Rebel defense hard, averaging 3 touchdowns a game for the first 3 games of the year. ULM then stomped the South Carolina Gamecocks 45-13 followed by a win against Mississippi State. After a bye week the Warhawks then went into Georgia to take on the decent Bulldogs and definetly took care of them, winning 31-14. Their final game of the 1st half was against the Marshall Thundering Herd, which they won 21-17.
