Season Wrap-Up

January 8, 2018

Season Report Posted: November 19, 2008 21:46

After a dominant first half of the season the 6-0 and #6 ULM Warhawks squared off against the South Carolina Gamecocks, a team that has given the Warhawks plenty of trouble in the last decade. Although South Carolina seemed tough at first, Chris Adams and the strong Monroe offense got back on top and stayed on top to win 21-7 heading into the bye week. After the bye was the biggest game of the regular season and it came against the #9 7-1 Florida Gators. This game practically decided which team wins the SEC East. The game went down to the wire and ULM came out on top 17-11 and jumped to #3 heading into a game against Kentucky. The "about to go 1-11" Kentucky Wildcats were no match for the Warhawks who then went on to play their final regular season SEC game against the Tennessee Volunteers. Sophomore kicker Patrick Baker ended up being the key player with a game-winning field goal that kept the Warhawks perfect season hopes alive. Following an easy game against Bowling Green the #2 Warhawks faced their final challenge of the regular season, the #12 Virginia Cavaliers. Everyone thought that this could be the team that knocks off Monroe, but everyone was wrong when ULM proved they were worthy of a national title bid by stomping the Cavs 24-6 and heading to the SEC championship game against Auburn. This rematch of last years game was an easy one for the Warhawks who took their 3rd consecutive SEC title 28-14 and received a bid for the National Title Game against #1 Arizona State. Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, and Brad Nessler all picked the Sun Devils to win the title and to dominate the Warhawks. Jim Thorpe Award winner James London and his fellow cornerbacks Damon Greco and George White all were set to change that. The Monroe defense shut down ASU the entire game and didn't allow a touchdown. Meanwhile the ULM offense led by SR(RS) QB Chris Adams scored twice, once to Derrick Brown and once to Antone Lloyd. When all was said and done the Warhawks were crowned National Champs after defeating ASU 14-3 and earning their 2nd national title in 3 years. The Warhawks will have a new quarterback next season and will likely make another championship run, but all predictions aside, it's time for the Warhawks to celebrate another championship as well as their 100th win under Coach of the Year Charlie Weatherbie.

Mid-Season Report

Season Report Posted: November 16, 2008 23:58

The ULM Warhawks have started their first season without QB Steve Davis in amazing fashion, currently standing at 6-0 (4-0) and #6 in the nation. It all started with a 27-3 domination of Arkansas followed by a 17-7 win over Ole Miss to get the Warhawks off to a good start. The Warhawks then went in to a supposedly easy game against ECU. The game looked to be in hand early but the Pirates slowly inched back and eventually tied the game and sent it to overtime. Both teams scored in the first overtime and it went to the second where UL-Monroe scored on a pass from Chris Adams to Ricky Sykes. Damon Greco intercepted a pass to end ECU's final drive and to seal the game, moving the Warhawks to 3-0. The following game was a rivalry game against the ULL Ragin' Cajuns, which was a no contest as the Warhawks took it easily 24-14. The last 2 games of the first half of the season we're conference matchups against LSU and Georgia. The first was against LSU and was a tight game that ULM won in the final seconds 23-20. The Georgia game was easier as the Warhawks won 21-14. The #6 Warhawks head into South Carolina and look to keep their winning ways.
