Season Wrap-Up

January 8, 2024

Season Report Posted: February 17, 2009 22:56

The Warhawks were on a mission. A mission to get back to the place that had eluded them for 2 years straight. The National Championship was the goal and the Warhawks were certainly in place to do so. After a strong 6-0 start to the season the #1 Warhawks had 6 more games to make it to the post season. They started the second half with a seemingly easy game @ South Carolina. The Warhawks found themselves in trouble early but managed to avoid a disaster by winning 49-42. The next game was supposedly easy but once again almost proved disasterous. ULM and 'Bama squared off in Alabama and it looked like Alabama had sealed the deal and the upset until Returner of the Year and Heisman finalist LaMont McNeal returned a kickoff in the last 10 seconds to give the Warhawks a close, but big win. The following week was known to some as the game of the year: The #1 ULM Warhawks vs. the #2 Florida Gators. The game was about more than BCS Poll position. This game was an SEC rivalry match between the only two teams who have won an SEC title in the last 8 years. The Warhawks came out early and never looked back, defeating the Gators 35-21, sending them into a 4 loss downward spiral that put them below their expectations. The Warhawks then finished up with big wins against Tennessee and #6 UCF going into the SEC Title game with #14 LSU. The Warhawks showed up early going up 10-0 against the Tigers. LSU looked to be down and out but slowly inched back as they got a touchdown followed by a clutch safety to get the score to 10-9. The Tigers then kicked a field goal to give themselves a 12-10 lead going into the final minute. The Warhawks, led by QB Nate Hill drove into scoring position and Ron McKinney kicked the game winner and secured the 2023 SEC title for the Warhawks and a spot in the BCS National Title Game against #2 Ohio State as well. A very much hyped title game turned out less than exciting. The game was even till about 2 minutes before halftime when Monroe started to pull away without turning back. The Warhawks secured their dreams by defeating Ohio State 42-21 and winning the 2023 BCS title. The Warhawks finally made it back to the promised land and this is their 5th title in school history. They will look to repeat next season but rumors of SO(RS) RB Mark Leffew's departure for the NFL Draft are becoming louder and louder in the ears of Charlie Weatherbie and it looks as if Leffew will go. In all likelyness Kevin Williams will likely take the snaps from runningback next season but only time will tell.

After QB Craig Moore's departure, Junior Nate Hill took over and is leading the Warhawks in the right direction. The Warhawks currently stand at #1 in the nation after an impressive 6-0 start. Starting off at #2 the Warhawks had two easy games against Oklahoma State and Arkansas followed up by a very historic game. Sophomore back Mark Leffew broke the only record that famous ULM runningback Henry Kane could not break. In one game Leffew rushed for 360 yards from scrimmage breaking the last school record not held by a player under Charlie Weatherbie. ULM followed up with a win over Army and a convincing conference win over #18 Ole Miss. The Warhawks then faced an undefeated Georgia team and pummeled them 31-6. The Warhawks now face a pesky South Carolina team and will look to keep moving towards the national title that they have been so far away from for the past 2 years.
